In a historical development for the Indian Railways, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off the country’s first-ever Sleeper Vande Bharat train, a fully air-conditioned semi-high speed long-distance train, between Kolkata (Howrah) and Guwahati (Kamakhya). The historic flagging off ceremony took place at the Malda Town Railway Station, which is located in the state of West Bengal.
This new sleeper train service is intended to provide passengers with an airplane-like overnight travel experience, which is completely different from the current short distance Vande Bharat train services and marks the beginning of the new expansion of long distance trains offered by Indian Railways.
A New Era in Rail Connectivity
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express (Train Nos. 27575/27576) is set to operate six days a week between Howrah and Kamakhya, with the outbound departure from Howrah at 6:20 PM and arrival in Guwahati at 8:20 AM the next day. On its return, it leaves Guwahati at 6:15 PM and reaches Howrah at 8:15 AM.
Taking a total of about 14 hours, this service cuts the journey time by a substantial 2.5 hours compared to the regular overnight trains. Such a development will greatly connect the areas of West Bengal, northern Assam, and the whole Northeast.
The train halts at the following major stations on the way: Bandel Junction, Nabadwip Dham, Azimganj, New Farakka, Malda Town, New Jalpaiguri, New Cooch Behar, New Alipurduar, New Bongaigaon and Rangiya.
State-of-the-Art Features & Passenger Experience
The Sleeper Vande Bharat announces the enhanced long-distance capability to India’s deluxe semi-high-speed trains. It comprises 16 fully air-conditioned coaches, in which 11 are AC 3-tier, four are AC 2-tier, and one First AC coach, with a passenger carrying capacity of 823.
Passengers can look forward to experiencing state-of-the-art facilities and elements of comfort unmatched in any other long-distance overnight train in the country:
- Ergonomically designed sleeper bunks and improved cushioning
- Auto Doors and Sealed GANGWAYs
- Bio-Vacuum Toilets and Modular Pantry Services
- CCTV Surveillance System & KAVACH anti-collision safety system
Regional cuisine menus — Bengali meals on departure from Kolkata and Assamese meals from Guwahati
A combination of comfort and safety makes the Sleeper Vande Bharat an attractive alternative to air travel on the same route, and the ticket prices, which are set lower than the usual cost of an air ticket, make it an even more alluring option, particularly in the 3AC and 2AC classes.
Tourism, Trade, and Regional Development -Boosting
The importance of the launch was brought out during PM Modi’s speech at the function, where he stated, “Lakshadweep and the holy land of Maa Kali have been connected to the holy land of Maa Kamakhya in Assam, and this represents both unity and mobility.”
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Ministry of Railways were reminded by officials that the new sleeper service is also expected to promote tourism, particularly for religious pilgrims and tourists, while also improving the transportation of students, migrant workers, and businessmen between states.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has termed the new train an “important milestone” for the people of the Northeast and has stated that faster connectivity would increase bonding between Assam and the rest of India.

Aligned with Broader Infrastructure Push
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train inauguration marked an initiative of infrastructure developments undertaken by the Centre in eastern India. As part of this initiative and during this occasion alone, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of various major projects worth more than ₹ 3,250 crore. These include various rail line projects and other freight maintenance and loco shed work.
This occasion was accompanied by the virtual flag-off of four new Amrit Bharat Express trains, thereby continuing the improved train services in the region.
Modi showed that India has greater and greater self-sufficiency in train production, saying that India produces more train coaches than some Western countries, which proves that there is a focus on being self-sufficient in terms of industrial development.
Looking Ahead: Expansion of Vande Bharat Sleeper Network
The railway authorities have also indicated that the Sleeper Vande Bharat has marked just the start of something special, since there have been plans for more sleeper trains that will run on long routes in the coming years, thus increasing the reach of such trains in India.Passengers traveling from Kolkata to Guwahati can expect more than a quicker means of transport, as it is a game-changing connection that promises more comfort and convenience, vindicating Indian Railways’ intentions to change the face of long-distance travel in the 21st century.
