The viral satire group’s X account, Cockroach Janata Party, was suspended in India, raising new concerns about political satire and censorship in today’s digital world. At the same time as this event, socially connected youths on social media platforms like Instagram are growing rapidly.
Those who attempt to access the account are greeted with a message indicating that the account has been “withheld in India due to legal notice received”. Founder Abhijit Dipke verified the action by sharing a screenshot of the message with his followers along with the post, “As expected, the account of the Cockroach Janta Party was withheld in India”.
The nature of the legal notice is unknown; however, it is known that shortly after gaining more followers than the BJP social media site, there were restrictions placed on access to their account.
Prior to being made unavailable in India, the group had approximately 200,000 Facebook followers; however, Instagram remains active and relevant for the group.
What Is the Cockroach Janta Party?
The Cockroach Janta Party, an acronym for CJP, started as an online political movement based on memes, primarily targeting India’s Generation Z. This movement uses satire, dark humour, meme-based media, and campaign-like content to raise awareness about various issues like; high levels of youth unemployment, rising inflation, and the leaks of test answers, leaving many frustrated with what is happening around them.
Many media outlets have reported that the movement was launched as a result of controversy that arose after a public figure labeled unemployed people as cockroaches. Members of CJP adopted the cockroach imagery as a form of resistance and satire for future purposes.
After launching, many media outlets reported that millions of people followed and registered with CJP, making it one of the fastest-growing digital movements in recent Indian political history. The founder accuses the company of being targeted and under digital pressure.

Founder Alleges Targeting and Digital Pressure
Abhi Dipke, the founder of CJP, claimed that after the closure of their X account, they were attempting to hack into their Instagram account. Online photos allegedly show unusual login attempts, suggesting that their Instagram has also been hacked.
Dipke asked why their account had been suspended as the #LeftStudentMovement’s followers have merely raised concerns about education and unemployment and holding leaders accountable. In one post he asked their followers “to use their voice and ask the Government why our account was suspended.” The Indian Government had not issued any official statement regarding the ban when this article went to press.
Social Media Reactions Flooding In
The hashtag related to the account suspension quickly became a trending topic across platforms such as Reddit, Instagram, and X. Supporters were accusing the authorities of suppressing dissent and satire, while critics called the #LeftStudentMovement nothing more than a temporary online trend.
Some users were arguing that the blocking of a satirical page represents an increasing trend of police abuse of online freedom of expression. Other users have described likely increasing visibility due to the “Streisand effect” that often occurs to internet users.
According to reports, a new account called “Cockroach is Back” was created within hours of the suspension and gained thousands of followers within hours, indicating the #LeftStudentMovement may survive the suspension.
Bigger Questions Around Digital Politics
This recent event illustrates how socially engaged youth are becoming through their usage of social media and using these digital tools to create political awareness within India. The initial creation of this meme-based campaign for a satirical nature of humor has transitioned into a greater examination of issues such as unemployed youth, social media as an avenue for activism, and the interaction between digital technologies and government entities’ efforts to regulate public life.
The future viability of the Cockroach Janta Party will depend upon the party´s ability to sustain itself as part of a continuum of long-lasting political culture movements; however, the speed with which this political/cultural trend emerged and subsequently faced legislative limitations have already guaranteed it a place in the continued development of internet politics within India.
