The beginning of 2026 has ushered in a great relief for rail passengers of Eastern and Northeastern India. The Indian Railways’ first ever Vande Bharat Sleeper train will be inaugurated by it next month on Guwahati – Howrah (Kolkata) route in mid-January.
If the Vande Bharat “Chair Car” revolutionised day travel, this new sleeper iteration is meant to upgrade the overnight experience. For decades, the run between the “Gateway to the Northeast” and the “City of Joy” has been serviced by vintage expresses. Now though, the launch of an indigenous semi-high-speed sleeper holds out the prospect of a journey that is not only quicker, but altogether more civilized.
Flag-Off and Launch Details
Rigorous trials, including high-speed stability tests, have been successfully completed as of January 1, 2026,” Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The train is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s between January 15 and 20, 2026.
This is a flagship project of “Purvodaya”, an initiative for fulsome development of East and North-East regions. By connecting West Bengal with Assam through world class infrastructure, the Railways wants to offer an affordable and viable alternative definition crush expensive regional flights.

Superior Comfort and Design
CompositionThe train consists of 16 coaches which includes 11 AC 3-Tier, 4 AC 2-Tier, and one AC First Class coach carrying a total passengers of 823. Unlike traditional coaches, these have “aeronautical” looks. The berths are ergonomically lined with upholstered cushioning and added padding, and the upper-berth access has been reconfigured with improved ladders to aid elderly passengers in climbing.
Stability at Speed
The train touched a ripping 180 km/h on recent trials over the Kota-Nagda section and during the “water-glass test”, conducted while it was lapping at this speed, water remained still as if frozen in a glass, even as the Japanese bullet zipped by—proof of cutting-edge suspension systems and vibration reduction.
Smart Amenities
Sanitation: The train comes with bio-vacuum toilets like those found in aircraft. The First AC coach also has hot water shower cubicles.
Safety: All coaches are equipped with Kavach (the indigenous anti-collision system), CCTV surveillance and aerosol-based fire suppression systems.
Ambient Environment: The cabin offers GFRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic) paneling, soft sensor lighting and a special type of air con system to keep the oxygen regulated within the cabin.
Route, Timings, and Stoppages
The Guwahati–Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper would be a six-day-a-week train. It will be an “overnight” express, with passengers able to hop aboard in the late evening and reach their destination at first light.
The train will cover important districts of Assam and West Bengal:
- Assam: Kamrup Metropolitan (Guwahati/Kamakhya) and Bongaigaon.
- West Bengal: Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri(NJP), Malda, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman and Hooghly.
Important halts include New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town and New Bongaigaon which will cut down travel time between these stations by at least 2 to 3 hours compared to superfast trains currently plying on this route.
Fare: Luxury for the Middle Class
The biggest reform, which Crome says was fintroduced with the train service is the elimination of dynamic pricing. The Ministry preferred to have fixed, transparent fares that can be affordable for the middle class.
With airfares on the Guwahati–Howrah sector varying from ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 at times,the Vande Bharat Sleeper pampers travellers with a premium experience at almost one-third of the price.
Regional Flavors: A Culinary Journey
As part of a bid to “humanizing” travel, Indian Railways is going to serve regional treats on trains.
From Guwahati: A traditional Assamese meal with local variants of rice and flavours await the passengers.
From Howrah: The menu will change to Bengali specialities, aimed at infusing the cultural spirit of both the regions in hospitality.
Looking Ahead: The Sleeper Expansion
This is only the beginning on the Guwahati–Howrah route. Minister Vaishnaw mentioned that 8 more Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will be brought into operation in the next six months and there will be a total of 12 running by December, 2026. There will eventually be long-haul routes of 1,200 to 1,500 kilometers around the country.
