Bollywood actor Bobby Deol has candidly opened up about one of the hardest times in his life – dealing with joblessness, self-doubt and alcoholism, which all led him down a very dark path. Bobby has discussed a question coming from his kids as creating a turning point for him to get his life and career back on track.

Bobby Deol is enjoying success in the second half of his Bollywood career. Projects such as Aashram, Class of ’83, and Animal have been seen as ground-breaking by some while others see Bobby Deol as one of the biggest names in the business right now.
Prior to this resurgence, however, Bobby went through a long period of professional disappointment. He experienced a complete lack of new film projects, so he started to suffer feelings of rejection and hopelessness being out of work for longer than he would like to be able to. In his case, it took far too long for him to realize that being out of work created a vicious cycle of self-pity as well as a successful journey into alcohol addiction.
Bobby said that he felt that no one would be interested in working with him any longer. Eventually, he let those feelings of frustration and disappointment take over his life; he used alcohol to relieve the emotional pain he was feeling because there was no way to get out of that emotional situation without alcohol.

“First You Drink Alcohol, Then Alcohol Drinks You”
Bobby painted a vivid picture of addiction while reflecting on how drinking affected him and his life. What began as sporadic alcohol consumption morphed quickly into an absolute dependence on it for comfort and escape from life’s challenges, ultimately taking over his life completely.
According to Bobby, many use drugs or alcohol as a crutch during rough times or when one feels alone and in despair. Eventually, what you leaned on for support no longer helps with anything and instead becomes a crutch.
During this difficult time, Bobby feels that he changed as a person. His personality changed to one that was irritable, angry and distant from those around him. Bobby’s mental well-being was in question because of his excessive use of alcohol and it had a major impact on his relationships with those he loved.

Tanya Deol His Greatest Support
Tanya has been Bobby’s rock through all of these difficult times and Bobby stated that he couldn’t have made it through without her love and support.
Tanya was also responsible for providing a roof over their family’s head when Bobby wasn’t working. Tanya provided financial stability for their family and made sure that Bobby always felt like he belonged or was not less of a man despite all of his struggles. Bobby claims Tanya was his strength and without her support he doesn’t believe he would have gotten through his toughest times.
Bobby also said it was emotionally draining for him living with someone who suffers from addiction: his moods, his anger and his frustration all impacted Family. Throughout this time Tanya has shown him nothing but support and patience. Bobby indicated to me that without Tanya’s support he would not have gotten to be who he is today.

The Turning Point
The catalyst for Bobby’s change came from his children – they were the ones who forced Bobby into a new way of thinking.
Bobby recalls hearing his kids (the innocent ones) asking their mom why she gets to go to work everyday while their dad watches them. That innocent question made Bobby see the reality of the situation.
Bobby came to the realization that children see their parents as role models. The fact that his children were questioning him was a wake up call that made him rethink his choices and the reason for them, ultimately leading Bobby to make the necessary changes.
Bobby indicated to me that something “Snapped” in him at that moment; instead of waiting for opportunities to come to him, he took it upon himself to work on himself, work on rebuilding his confidence, and pursue a path back to being the person he used to be.
Family’s Concern Became a Wake-Up Call
Bobby Deol was aware that not only did his children tell him about the concern and sadness they felt for him, but also that he could see it in the faces of his family members. They were worried about where the direction he was going with his life and wanted him to get free from addiction.
In the past, Bobby said that his family was afraid of the bad side of his personality that would come out when he was drunk. Another big reason why Bobby wanted to make a change was because of what it was doing emotionally to his family members.
