The recent wave of political controversy in West Bengal was sparked by an alleged assault on Abhishek Banerjee, which occurred when he visited Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district. The altercation took place at an already politically charged time, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) blaming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for instigating the attack, while the BJP refuted this accusation.
Abhishek Banerjee went to Sonarpur in order to speak with victims of the violence committed after the state’s most recent elections. Upon arriving in Sonarpur on Friday, a multitude of protesters gathered and began to chant against him. As chaos erupted during the visit, members of the crowd allegedly threw eggs, bricks and slippers at Banerjee. Video footage exists that shows Banerjee being protected by multiple security personnel as he was approached with hostility by numerous members of the crowd.
Witnesses said that members of the crowd were shouting “chor,” or “thief,” at Banerjee and had set out to obstruct his passage from place to place. Banerjee’s shirt was reportedly ripped off and his eyeglasses were broken during the fracas, and security personnel utilized an escort in order to help him move through the demonstrators.
Helmet Used for Protection Amid Chaos
An image of Abhishek Banerjee, wearing a cricket helmet as he walked through the crowd, was one of the most visually gripping from the incident. Banerjee was given the helmet by security officials after stones and other objects had allegedly been thrown at him.
As can be seen in the videos from the scene Banerjee continued on his visit despite being attacked, with security personnel creating a protective cordon around him. The helmet had become a focal point on the tense conditions under which the TMC leader was able to perform his programme.

BJP is blamed for Attack
The Trinamool Congress has condemned the incidents and accused the workers of the BJP of planning to attack Banerjee. Banerjee alleged that the attack was premeditated and intended to intimidate him from meeting with victims of political violence.
When he spoke to the media after the incident, he claimed that the attackers were mobilised by the BJP ahead of time and there was a growing political intolerance and continued harassment of leaders of the TMC. TMC leaders also expressed concern regarding the role played by local officials, alleging that the security provisions were grossly inadequate given that they had previously been made aware of the visit.
According to TMC leaders, the attack was a serious threat to democratic political activity and called for a full inquiry into the events which occurred in Sonarpur.

Mamata Banerjee Reacts Sharply
In response to her nephew’s injured state, former chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee expressed outrage at the attack and claimed he could have died had a helmet not been put on his head immediately prior to the incident occurring.
Banerjee stated that her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, had suffered injuries to his chest and ribs around the area where he was attacked by both individuals throwing objects at him.
Mamata Banerjee’s statements added fuel to the fire of political tensions when she accused the ruling regime as well as their supporters of creating an atmosphere of fear and violence throughout the state.

BJP Rejects Allegations
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejected the allegations made by the TMC and claimed that they were not involved in any way with the attack. BJP representatives claimed that the large public outrage that occurred in Sonarpur was not pre-planned, but rather a reflection of the general anger that many residents of the area feel towards their local community.
According to BJP officials, the protests were not pre-planned; rather, the protests arose out of residents who expressed their anger towards the previous leader from the TMC. BJP officials accused the TMC of attempting to politicize the issue at hand in order to gain attention away from larger public issues. The BJP maintained that they had no involvement with the event.

Amid rising tensions in West Bengal due to recent electoral outcomes and post-poll violence allegations between both TMC & BJP, the Sonarpur incident adds fuel to an already explosive situation.
