This is the first public display of the long-awaited bullet train project (Indian Railways’ MAHSR or Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail). The Ministry of Railways in India unveiled a visual representation of the country’s proposed high-speed train. The image shown represents what could be the future of travel by rail in India.
India’s First Bullet Train on the Bombay-Ahmedabad Corridor
The proposed design was located outside of the Ministry of Railways Gate No. 4 on the first floor. The train is a sleek, aerodynamic vehicle with a white body and black accents featuring a range of design features seen in many international high-speed rail systems. As shown above, within hours of the display of the above image, there were over 1600 posts about the image circulating on various forms of social media. The reveal has created tremendous interest from both rail fans and commuters as India gets closer to becoming part of the elite few of countries that have high-speed rail.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor to Be India’s First Bullet Train Route
An 508 km long, High-Speed Rail line has been proposed between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, linking the two cities as well as the largest urban areas in Maharashtra, Gujarat.
The twelve stations on this line will include Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, Sabarmati. With speeds of 320 km/h, the travel time between these two metro areas will be just under two hours for certain runs.
Railway officials responded by saying that while this image has raised much debate, it is only a “representational image” not the actual train design. They said it indicated what direction the project was heading as it moved forward.
Currently, BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) of Bangalore is developing the actual bullet train, and the finished design/appearance may differ from what has been shown at Rail Bhawan.
The distinction was necessary because many members of the press referred to this representational image as the first official look at the bullet train’s final configuration.

‘Make in India’ Push for High-Speed Rail
As part of its larger programme “Make in India”, the government is promoting the bullet train project. Reports indicate that high-speed rails can contain both advanced technology and domestic production capacity.
The MAHSR project is being developed in partnership between India and Japan. As such, it is largely based on Japan’s world-famous Shinkansen system, which has a well-earned reputation for speed, safety and punctuality.
According to officials, this project aims to create not only improved rail infrastructure, but also expertise in high-speed rail engineering and manufacturing.

Construction Underway – Massive Engineering Project
Construction of the corridor is progressing rapidly in different phases. The most difficult aspect of constructing the project involves an underground system in Mumbai, which will include India’s first undersea railway tunnel under Thane Creek.
India deployed its largest rail tunnel boring machines (TBMs) on the project recently. Weighing over 3,000 tonnes, these massive machines will excavate underground portions of the route.
This is a major milestone in India’s construction project ambitions and demonstrates the sheer size and scale of engineering required to develop the country’s first high-speed rail system.

Expected Launch Timeline
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had mentioned earlier that the bullet train project would begin its operation in August 15, 2027, and that the rollout would be done in phases. Some corridors would be operational before their entire length is completed.
According to reports, the Surat-Billimora stretch may be ready for service before the full Mumbai/Ahmedabad corridor is complete.

The image of the train was released online, which drew both positive and negative responses from social media users. Some users were impressed with the futuristic design of the train and welcomed high-speed rail to India. Others were sceptical about whether what will be put into operation will look like what was shown by the Railways.
Some social media users had questions regarding the overall design, colour scheme, and aesthetics of the train; however, some users commented that performance and reliability are far more important than the look of the train after it commences operations.
Symbol of India’s Ambition for Transportation
Although the image was created to indicate the basic concept for developing this type of trains in India, it has once again generated excitement for India’s dream of a bullet train system. This project is one of the largest infrastructure projects India has undertaken in its transportation system, and will revolutionise the way inter-city transportation is conducted, when these trains become operational.
If the bullet train corridor from Mumbai to Ahmedabad opens on schedule, it will change how we think about and conduct transportation within our cities.
