Siddaramaiah has announced today that he is resigning from his role as Karnataka Chief Minister after months of intense speculation regarding the Congress party that governs the state. Siddaramaiah will step down from his position and hand over power to D.K Shivakumar, who serves as Deputy CM. This moves the Congress right into a place where they can make a new political strategy for the remainder of this year-leading up to upcoming elections and possible change(s).
“Emotional” Goodbyes from Siddaramaiah
Siddaramaiah resigned from his position as the Chief Minister of Karnataka and held a press conference in Bengaluru, where he spoke with great emotion about his time serving the people of Karnataka and expressed thanks to Congress border leaders for remaining committed in their positions and allowing him to serve as Chief Minister on two occasions. He specifically identified Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge as the top three Congress leaders who he would like to express appreciation to for their leadership in allowing him to fill this role on two occasions.

Siddaramaiah stated that he had always thought that when the national leadership of the party asked him for his resignation, he would do so without any hesitation or question. He also reemphasized that the welfare guarantee programs created during his time in office have placed millions of people in Karnataka into a better position than they were in prior to their implementation.

Power Transition Within Congress
This resignation is viewed as part of a planned leadership transition within the Congress party. As a part of that lead-up to his resignation, Siddaramaiah met with his Cabinet at his official residence for a breakfast meeting before he officially resigned. This meeting was attended by D.K. Shivakumar along with numerous other senior leaders.
Political observers have speculated for some time that there was going to be a rotational arrangement between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar after 2023 when Congress came to power in Karnataka. The party did not confirm this arrangement officially, but this development appears to support those claims.

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation and immediately dissolved the state cabinet. The formal acceptance occurred when the resignation letter was given to Raj Bhavan officials in the absence of the Governor.

Shivakumar will face many challenges when he takes over as party president, such as the management of factionalism, the continuation of welfare schemes, and the preparations for the 2028 Assembly elections. He is well-respected across the board and is considered a strong organizational leader who played a significant role in Congress’s victory in the state of Karnataka in 2023.
The transition of power from Siddaramaiah to D. K. Shivakumar will challenge Congress, as the party works to keep the different power groups inside of Congress united.
