This week a conference was held in the gleaming, sun-filled vicinities of the Qasr Al Watan palace in Abu Dhabi that had little in common with the frozen and artillery-scarred wastelands of Eastern Europe. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, having replaced his customary olive-drab fatigues with a somewhat more business-like-yet-leathery ensemble was seated opposite UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ).
The traditional exchange of pleasantries and the sterile protocol of international statecraft were photographed by the cameras but the air was filled with the burden of two crises with which the world was encircled. This was no token visit; this was an encounter of Eastern European life and death, and Western Asian balance. It has become a pivotal, albeit silent, contact between the West and the Global South in an era of broken alliances between Kyiv and Abu Dhabi.
A Common Policy of Insecurity
On the one hand, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates appear to live in two different worlds. One is a country that is waging the traditional war of decolonization against superpower; the other one is the global financial, logistical, and energy center that is sailing through the unstable waters of geopolitical life in the Middle East. Nonetheless, when the two leaders converse, it is evident that they both use the same language; food security, energy stability and de-escalation of proxy wars.
To Zelenskyy, the UAE is not just a highly wealthy partner; it is a middle power that has its own channel of communication to Moscow. The UAE has been a mediator, whereby it has been involved in several high-profile exchanges of prisoners of war that have helped Ukrainian soldiers reunite with their families.
The diplomatic source emphasized that whenever an aircraft enters Kyiv bringing freed prisoners, it creates a thread that links that moment to the diplomatic work of Abu Dhabi. This is the meeting which is aimed at tightening that thread when the world is stretched to the burning tension in the West Asian region.
The conversation was bound to lead to the so-called West Asia security issues; the diplomatic short talk of the mounting instability of Iran, the maritime security of the Red Sea, and the continued humanitarian disasters in Gaza and Lebanon. There is no one like Zelenskyy who realizes that a huge escalation of the Middle East takes oxygen, ammunition and financial resources not to defend Ukraine.

The Desert Table and the Grain Corridor
The most humannizing thing about the conversations was the discussion of the program called the Grain from Ukraine. The irony of what is happening in modern history is that the black soil of Ukraine nourishes the world even as its people languish under siege like in famine.
As one of the biggest logistics centers, the UAE is now central to guaranteeing that the Ukrainian agricultural products are shipped to the African and Middle East countries that require their products the most. At the meeting, Zelenskyy was grateful to the UAE and their assistance in keeping the maritime routes open despite the constant danger of Russian naval enjoyment.
The main pillars of the Humanitarian Cooperation are:
- Medical Rehabilitation: Broadening the programs on Ukrainian children and war veterans to get specialized care in Emirati hospitals.
- Energy Infrastructure: Previously, the UAE has already dispatched the thousands of household generators to Ukraine to allow the country to endure the so-called dark winters due to power grid strikes.
- Post-War Reconstruction: preliminary deliberations on the “Emirati Model” of fast city growth that is underway in the reconstruction of cities such as Hostomel and Irpin.
To support Ukraine is a balancing game to the UAE. Abu Dhabi has a so-called strategic independence, declining to participate in Western sanctions against Russia, but at the same time supplying millions in humanitarian aid to Kyiv. This innocence with a conscience enables them to play a back-channel which both Washington and Brussels have no access to.
Managing the West Asian Chessboard.
The most complicated part of the visit was the weakening security situation in West Asia. The visit of Zelenskyy is given the atmosphere when the world is getting more connected in its disarray. The drones used to attack Ukrainian cities are frequently the same drones which are also used by regional actors in the Middle East, which forms a technical and military link between the two war theaters.
