The U.S. military operates at an unmatched level on a global scale and has established Israel as one of the strongest militaries in the Middle East, especially in terms of working together with U.S. assistance. The Israeli military has a qualitative advantage over all Middle Eastern militaries due to the expansion of U.S. forces globally (scale and reach) and thus, a more significant combined power than either would have alone due to U.S. assistance when executing operations against Iran.
United States Military: Superpower in Scale and Budget (Total)
The United States has the largest military in the world (ranked #1 in military strength indexes) and the largest defense budget, which far exceeds that of the rest of the world combined; U.S. active duty and reserve personnel number more than 2 million with ample air, naval, and cyber capabilities, as well as unparalleled global logistics support.
Global Reach/Precision Capabilities
- The U.S. military has a worldwide network of bases, aircraft carriers, advanced stealth aircraft
- Israel: Advanced Regional Military with U.S. Partnership
Qualitative Edge & Force Structure
Israel has military might that is much more advanced but not large by US standards. Though smaller than the US, Israel has a very highly trained, advanced tech force and has a great focus on the regional threat environment around them. Compared to the rest of the world, Israel’s military capability would be at a mid-level, but would be superior to any of its neighbours because of the amount of airpower, the sophistication of its airpower and the strength of its air defence systems.
The Israeli Air Force has a, generally speaking, modern day fighter force that includes the F-35. They have also developed multi-layered air defence systems that include the Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow interceptors.

US Support & Integration
Israel receives a tremendous amount of military assistance and cooperation from the US. Israel has been a major non-NATO ally of the US since the 1970s and has received an annual amount of Foreign Military Financing to purchase US-made military systems. This assistance has given Israel capability beyond what could be functionally provided for by their size.
Operational Detail
In Israel’s largest combined air assault on Iran, they used hundreds of aircraft against hundreds of targets; The US military supported them with airlift, maritime and logistical for the attack on Iranian targets.
Major Differences in Military Capability
- Size and Capability
US: The US has the biggest military spending and budget than anyone in the world. The US has military capability in all parts of the world, possess son-of-a-bomb nuclear capability (via the triad); has carrier strike groups; has the ability to lift and refuel great amounts of cargo and passengers.
Israel: Although smaller with the quantity of military resources and spending available, there is a commensurate amount of resources and manpower dedicated to regional deterrence, and high technology rapid response as opposed to global projective capabilities.
- Strategic Role
1. The United States can conduct extensive multi-theater campaigns for long periods of time due to its status as a world superpower.
2. While the State of Israel possesses the strongest defense capabilities in its region and benefits from highly integrated defense systems per capita (e.g., its Air Force), it does not have much capacity for time-limited, large-scale ground operations without U.S. support.
- Asset Flow and Support
Technology and logistics support provided by the United States have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the Israeli military. The most notable example is the effect of U.S. AAR capabilities on increasing the effective range of Israeli fighter aircraft.
