The Union government has given the go-ahead for a big plan to spend ₹887 crore building a world-class port in Mumbai Harbour. The project’s goals are to improve coastal trade, attract more tourists to the water and make Mumbai’s harbor a modern destination. The government wants to improve facilities and business activity along India’s shoreline, and this project is part of that plan.

A Big Push for Coastal and Maritime Development
The new harbor plan, called “Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina,” has been cleared. It will be built on about 12 hectares of water in the Mumbai Harbour zone. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways gave the project the go-ahead. This shows that the government is investing heavily in the blue economy and in coastal infrastructure.
Officials say the port will have enough docks for up to 424 boats up to 30 meters long. This new infrastructure will help Mumbai’s waterfront get more tourists from India and other countries, making the city even more important as one of India’s marine hubs.

How the Marina Will Be Built and Financed
It will cost about ₹887 crore, and the Mumbai Port Authority and a private company will split the cost. On an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis, the Port Authority wants to spend about ₹470 crore to build the main naval facilities. This includes features like breakwaters, service platforms, pontoons and gangways that are necessary for yachts to move and operate safely. A private company will use the last 417 crore to build buildings on land. A harbor dock building, a sailing school, a tourist development center, hotel and clubhouse facilities, a skill development center and infrastructure for yacht repair and storage are among the planned features. Bidding for the mainland expansion has already started, and it will end before the end of December 2025.
Expected Economic and Tourism Benefits
Government plans say the port will create more than 2,000 jobs across a variety of fields. These jobs will include running a port, providing travel and entertainment services, working as a host, maintaining yachts, and other related tasks. Officials think this will give people in the area new ways to make money and help industries related to sea tourism grow.
The project is supposed to bring in a lot of private funding, make it easier for people to get to the waterfront, and create jobs. The project will make parts of the harbor area available for public use and recreation. It will also create new areas for events, water sports, and tourist services.
Planners also think that the marina will help the port run more smoothly by adding more places for people to launch their boats for fun, away from the busy business docks. This could also make room for expensive ships and help Mumbai become a center for marine activity in the area.
Aligning With National Maritime Vision
The Mumbai Marina Project works with bigger plans for the country, like the Maritime India Vision 2030, the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the Sagarmala Program and the Cruise Bharat Mission. The goal of these policies is to modernize India’s ports, improve coastal shipping, and boost the country’s role in international marine trade and tourism.
Officials also say the harbor will host regattas, boat shows, and other international events, making Mumbai even more appealing to tourists from around the world. The project’s goal is to give the city’s waterfront a new look by combining modern marine facilities with training programs, tourists and fun activities.
What It Means for Mumbai and Beyond
The project is a big step forward for Mumbai’s infrastructure and could change how the city uses its marine resources. In addition to helping the economy, the harbor should also attract high-value investments in tourism and recreation. It also fits with India’s national goals to grow its coastal economy, encourage the private sector to get involved and build up areas near its rivers.
The harbor plan could be used as a model for similar seaside projects in other port towns. Construction and bidding are already underway. If it works, it could lead to long-term growth in marine tourism, leisure fishing, and building on harborfronts across the country.
