In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to intervene in matters involving the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the Trinamool Congress (TMC) expressed appreciation and declared it as an important step to safeguard democratic rights and facilitate proper democratic conduct of elections. The decision of the Court is viewed by the TMC as bringing in much-needed transparency and accountability to the SIR process.
In making these statements, senior leaders within the TMC asserted that this kind of intervention validated long-standing doubts that they had raised regarding how the SIR process was being implemented across many parts of the state.
Allegations of Impropriety in the Election Revision Process
The TMC has also stated on numerous occasions that the SIR process is being used inappropriately to target certain voters (especially those who are part of the minority) by removing or flagging valid voters from the list without properly verifying their identities. As a result of these alleged practices, the TMC is concerned that these actions will lead to an excessive number of people being denied their right to vote.
According to members of the TMC’s leadership, if left unchallenged, these practices could negatively impact voter confidence in future elections and therefore, could diminish the level of support for democratic institutions.
Supreme Court’s Role Seen as Crucial
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to intervene, stating that such judicial scrutiny will guarantee that constitutional principles are respected. The TMC added that free and fair elections are the foundation of democracy, so any government action that affects the voter rolls must conform to established legal protections.
“Our request for complete transparency through the SIR process was met with a positive response from the Supreme Court,” said one senior official with the TMC. He said that it is now important to have clear guidelines, adequate notice given to individual voters, and a good system for dealing with grievances.
Moreover, TMC officials called for accountability from officials who conducted the revision and stated that election procedures must be free of political influence.
Criticism of the Centre
The party also used this opportunity to attack the central government and accused it of ignoring the alleged irregularities in the elections. The TMC believes that the central government is using administrative tools, including electoral revisions, to target opposition-ruled states.
According to the party, the Supreme Court’s intervention points out that the executive has failed to deal with the legitimate concerns raised by both the political parties and by civil society groups.
The Next Step
The TMC will continue its close monitoring of the situation and continue to raise its voice on behalf of all voters’ rights. The party hopes that the Supreme Court’s involvement will lead to corrective action and restore confidence in the electoral process.
The TMC reaffirmed its commitment to democracy and that it would utilize all constitutional avenues to make sure that every eligible voter has the right to vote.
