Suresh Kalmadi, a former Pune Member of Parliament and top Congress leader, died on Tuesday at the age of 82. He had a long and busy political career that had a big impact on Maharashtra politics. The body will be kept at his home until 2 p.m., after which the last rites will be given later that evening.
Suresh Kalmadi is a major political figure in Pune
For many years, Suresh Kalmadi was seen as one of the most important politicians in Pune. He was known for being very good at organising things and having a lot of ties at the local level. He served the Pune district in Parliament several times and was respected by people of all party views in the city. A large group of people in Pune’s political scene recognised his impact on local politics, which helped him stay in office as an MP for long periods of time.
In the years when the Congress party was in charge at the centre, Kalmadi was also a Union Minister. For a long time, he had a lot of political power in Pune.
Who was Suresh Shamrao Kalmadi?
Suresh Shamrao Kalmadi was born on May 1, 1944, and used to be a pilot in the Indian Air Force before he became famous. He then served three terms in the Rajya Sabha, from 1982 to 1996 and again in 1998. This was on top of his terms in the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 2004. He was also very important in running sports organisations. As President of the Indian Olympic Association, he was in charge of pushing sports events in India.
In his later years, Kalmadi mostly stopped being involved in politics because he was sick for a long time. Sources close to the family say that NCP head Sharad Pawar met with him a few days ago after his health got worse.
People remember Kalmadi as a complicated person. He was a powerful politician and sports official, and his name is still linked to one of India’s biggest sports scandals.
The Commonwealth Games Case and the Fall of the Government
Concerns about the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, on the other hand, caused a big change in Kalmadi’s career. As the head of the planning group, he was accused of bribery, graft, and large-scale financial wrongdoing in how the event was run and contracts were given out. He was arrested and put on trial on charges including criminal plot because of the issue, which did a lot of damage to his public image.
The scam was the start of his electoral fall, and the accusations made his earlier work look less important. Even though the Enforcement Directorate closed the case and gave him a clean bill of health in April 2025, the damage to his political position could not be fixed. Even with the help of the law, Kalmadi was not able to make a return in Pune politics.
