A family of four died mysteriously at home in Mumbai after eating watermelon. The deaths of the two parents and two children are being investigated. Authorities are working to establish how the family died. Preliminary investigation concludes the watermelon was purchased hours before the family started showing signs of ill health. They experienced sudden onset symptoms that resulted in death.
Police Investigation Underway
Neighbors reported concern over not hearing from the family and called on police to enter and investigate the home, where they found the deceased. Toxicology testing of the watermelon used by the family is still being conducted, and police are continuing their investigation into how the entire family died by way of collecting and testing the remaining food items still in the house, ensuring no other food items or contaminants contributed to the deaths.
Authorities in the area of the watermelon purchase are speaking with nearby fruit retailers to identify where the watermelon came from and if it may have been chemically treated or contaminated while being stored or transported.

Awaiting forensic confirmation
Authorities have said that once forensic and toxicology reports have been received, the actual cause of death can be confirmed. The results of the reports are anticipated to determine if there were any hazardous agents, such as pesticides, contained in the watermelon itself.
Medical professionals associated with the case have stated that symptoms that were noted in the preliminary report are typical of severe poisoning, but have also indicated that it is too soon to reach any definitive conclusions without scientific data.
Public Health Concerns Raised
The incident has raised public health concerns for residents of the area, in particular questions surrounding food safety and how fruits are handled within local markets. The majority of fruits consumed during the warmer months are extremely safe; however, improper storage or contamination of fruits with chemicals can present a risk to public health.
Food safety officials have instructed consumers to wash all fruits very well prior to consuming them and advised consumers to only purchase from reliable suppliers. They have also recommended an increased level of oversight of pesticides used and the supply chain as well as developing measures to avoid similar situations in the future.
