Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha was earlier working as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member. He has now joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Definitely, this represents an extreme political upheaval recently. While the AAP is working to establish itself as a legitimate voice in the Indian political scene, this event casts doubt on AAP’s ambitions to do so!
Reason for Chadha’s exit
Chadha is undoubtedly one the most powerpolizations in Punjab and the BJP is looking ahead to build its value with the foothold of Raghav Chadha. This will give a clear reality check to the people of Punjab about the ongoing political turmoil and the assurance of the changing landscape that the state is going to confront in the recent time.
AAP’s Response: “Betrayal”
AAP has explain the resignation of a selected officials to other political parties in the name of ‘betrayal’ and definitely this is going to create a notion on the voters too. AAP believes that BJP has used different types of pressure tactics and has also offered rewards to the AAP representatives to leave the party and join them in turn.
There is at least one individual from the AAP party that has stated they will look into whether they can get these representatives disqualified so legal and constitutional challenges can be made against the defectors.
In Punjab, AAP officials have provided a direct response, creating the term “backstabbing” to describe the defection and alleging that the BJP is working to undermine AAP’s government in Punjab.
Chadha has stated that he had to leave AAP due to different types of differences that he had with the other party members, both in terms of opinion in ideology and other decisions. He even stated about the internal disagreements that he had with the Delhi Chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal. This is a new development that has taken space recently and we expect something really good to come up from the future elections.

Broader Implications
An important new development in Indian politics is this split between the two rival parties; it reflects the continuing instability and volatility of young political parties, such as the Aam Admi Party (AAP). Additionally, this is an additional example of the BJP’s success in extending its influence by attracting leaders away from its competition.
The split could possibly:
- Diminish AAP’s ability to be successful nationwide
- Increase BJP’s ability to pass bills
- Intensify political partisan divide prior to the next election
In addition, this switch brings to light the larger issues of political unity, ideological consistency and how much parties place value on their internal democratic processes.
What does it mean for AAP in the long term?
The power in the Rajya Sabha is gradually sinking and the clear division among the members of the party is consequently raising a question on the party’s credibility and cohesion. If we talk of Raghav Chadha alone, this is going to be both risky and opportunistic at the same time. His transition from one of the most talented members of AAP to becoming a rookie in the political apparatus is all evident along his journey.
Now, people have been questioning on the internal stability of AAP and definitely, the long term strategy of the party is going to gain the trust of the voters amid this turmoil.
