The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an attack on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah after pictures of him at a breakfast meeting with his deputy, D.K. Shivakumar, wearing an allegedly 43-lakh Santos de Cartier watch surfaced. The opposition says that the luxurious timepiece raises serious questions on his reputation as a people’s leader and a Chief Minister, especially at a time when the state is facing severe governance and financial difficulties.

According to BJP leaders, the photograph underscores Siddaramaiah’s extravagant thinking, claiming his brand of socialism comes with a price tag.
Opposition’s Charge of Extravagance Amid Crisis
In its attack, the BJP made the point that the watch conveys a contradictory message: at a time when Karnataka is grappling with deteriorating infrastructure, drought, and a stringent fiscal climate, its Chief Minister is shown in the timepiece of luxury.
Opponents believe that this disclosure diminishes the integrity of the government of Siddaramaiah. During a press conference, a BJP spokesperson said: Can you speak of social justice and welfare, when the man leading the state is allowed such extravagance? The opposition cites these optics as a sign of the government being out of touch with the suffering of common people, at least as far as they tell the story.

Reminiscent of the 2016 Watch Controversy
This is not the first controversy Siddaramaiah has found himself in regarding watches. In 2016, he wore a luxury watch valued at ₹70 lakh, which earned him criticism. At the time, he had made the watch a state property after being pressured and brought to book.
Now, as the ₹43-lakh watch is in the limelight, people are making comparisons, implying that leaders must be attentive to the mood of the people and maintain the simplicity of the public office.

Congress Tries to Contain Fallout Amid Internal Tussle
This controversy comes at an opportune time. The current Indian National Congress ruling party in Karnataka is already under strain as there is a real possibility of a leadership change involving Siddaramaiah and his deputy D.K. Shivakumar.
Analysts feel that the BJP is using the image of the watch scandal as well as the internal discomfort in the ruling party to apply political pressure. To the Congress, this may further make it more difficult to appear united and concentrate on governing.
What’s Next- Political Fallout and Public Perception
The controversy is not going to be forgotten soon with the video and photo going viral. In the case of Siddaramaiah, the main issue will be how to explain the wearing of such an expensive watch is in line with his image and his priorities in governance. In the case of the BJP, this provides an effective campaign story before future legislative sessions.
Undoubtedly, with the ongoing drama of Siddaramaiah’s watch, it seems that optics matter a lot for the common people. The political implications of this on the wider state debate may be characterized by how this impacts the general opinion in rural and drought-affected areas.
