Economy class isn’t exactly a luxurious experience, so any little comfort can go a long way on a long-haul journey. What’s perhaps less known to many passengers is that there are a number of ‘secret’ benefits available on board – and they’re completely free if you know where to look or what to ask for. Cabin crews will tell you that flyers do not notice these benefits at all as they walk on board.

One of the hidden perks that was most surprised about was the seated complimentary snack station located in the galleys. Flight crew members sometimes call these spots their “wonder walls” — sections that are stocked with treats that passengers generally assume only belong to premium cabins. In most airlines, premium areas offer an enhanced snack box of crisps, gummy sweets and sometimes small comfort items like eye masks and spare socks. Many of these items will be neatly arranged behind panels that customers can only see if they look around a bit.

But, economy passengers aren’t neglected. A similar snack basket is usually stored in the rear galley, with bite-sized snacks like cookies, chocolate and pretzels or sometimes small crisp packets – but YMMV. Most passengers in fact never think they can just head to the galley and politely ask for something from the stash. These baskets are continuously replenished by cabin crew on longer legs – especially on long hauls as the one you saw.
A flight attendant said in that guests can ask for things even though they may not actively be displayed. Drinks are among those perks — free refills of juice or water are often an option whenever during the flight. Instead of waiting for the drinks trolley to pass down the aisle again, passengers can walk up to the galley and get a rapid refill. It might take up a little more room in your carry-on, but even this one simple tweak can help make those long flights a bit more comfortable and stave off the dry, dehydrated feeling we often experience at high altitudes.
But above and beyond the snacks and drinks, there’s a lesser-known benefit not everyone has noticed: free hygiene products in the lavatories. Sanitary pads, among other hygiene necessities, are sometimes discreetly tucked underneath the sink by many airlines. On most models, a small button releases the compartment that contains these tools. Cabin crew at airlines reportedly note that those products are available for passengers that may need them as a surprise, providing an extra much-needed layer of comfort for peace of mind when flying.
And yet, many passengers still feel reluctant to request any more than what’s already being offered at service time. Cabin crew frequently tell passengers to just walk into the galley and see if there is anything else ‘lying around’. These benefits are meant to be used and the crew is more than willing to help if asked nicely.
The takeaway is clear
Economy travel can seem basic, but there are hidden perks that make the trip a lot more pleasant. A brief trip to the galley, a friendly query to the cabin crew or a peak under the lavatory sink can be all it takes to uncover an unexpected array of free creature comforts. Unsuspecting travelers frequently overlook these tiny yet delightful odds and ends, simply because they believe that anything more than the normal meal has to be added on at some price.
And, as it turns out, there are little insider secrets that know-it-all fliers use to turn an ordinary flight into a much more pleasant trip — and you don’t have to be riding in first-class for them all.
