According to a new study, gravity is very important for human fertility. In situations like those in space, scientists have found that sperm have a hard time doing one of their most important jobs, which is to find and reach the egg. This finding shows that not having gravity can directly affect fertility, which makes people worry about getting pregnant on long-term space trips.

The study shows that even though people can live in space with today’s technology, it might not be easy for them to reproduce. Gravity is a big part of how Earth’s natural systems work, and taking away this force causes problems that were not expected.

Sperm lose their ability to find their way

Sperm lose their ability to find their way in space, which is one of the most important things the study found. They are still swimming, but they aren’t moving in a straight line. In other words, they don’t move toward the egg; instead, they move around randomly, which lowers the chances of fertilisation.

Scientists saw that almost half of the sperm that were tried in conditions like those in space failed to reach their goal. The problem is not with speed or strength, but with where to look. On Earth, sperm use real signs, like gravity, to find their way. Without these messages, they get lost and stop working.

In space, the chances of fertilisation go down

The study also found that the rate of fertilisation drops a lot in space. Experiments showed that when sperm were introduced to these conditions, the chance of fertilisation going well went down. This means that even if the sperm get to the egg, there aren’t as many chances of making a baby that will live.

Researchers think that this effect doesn’t just happen to people. Across different species, the findings were the same, which shows that gravity is a common factor in reproduction. Putting people in space in the future will be even harder as of this problem.

                            also read:

There are more problems with early development

The problems don’t end when the eggs are laid. The study found that eggs that are made in situations of low gravity tend to grow more slowly. They may have had fewer cells in the beginning, which can affect their health and growth as a whole.

These risks seem to get worse with long-term exposure to settings that are like space. Some eggs were able to grow properly, but a lot of them were behind schedule. If pregnancy does happen in space, this means that keeping the baby safe could be another big problem.

                            Scientists look for possible answers

Now, scientists are trying to figure out how to fix these issues. Adding a natural reproduction hormone helped sperm find its way better in microgravity, as shown in one trial. More sperm were able to move in the right way with this help.

But this answer is still in its early stages. Higher amounts of the hormone than usually found in the body had to be used, and experts aren’t sure if this method would work or be safe in real life. Before a workable answer can be made, more research needs to be done.

A Big Question for Space Travel in the Future

These results make me very worried about the future of people living in space. Space agencies are making plans for trips that could last for years and could include building cities on other worlds. Reproduction will be a key part of these kinds of plans working.

The study makes it clear that reproduction in space is different in many ways, from the movement of sperm to the growth of embryos. For this reason, scientists will have to come up with new ways and tools to help people live in space.

It’s fun to think about having families outside of Earth, but it’s not that easy to do. According to the study, it might still be hard to get pregnant in space until these biology problems are fixed.
