An ongoing controversy is taking place over Miss India Earth 2019, Sayali Surve’s reconversion from Islam back into Hinduism after being subjected to harassment as a result of her marriage that was performed interfaith. Reports initially suggested she had ended her marriage after years of experiencing mental and physical abuse following this marriage as part of an interfaith couple, which began with her marriage to a Muslim man.
The events that led to the controversy began when Sayali Surve married Mumbai-based businessman Aatif, having faced opposition from her family regarding an interfaith marriage. Soon after she was married, she converted from her native religion of Hinduism to Islam and changed her name as a result of the religious conversion in the process.
What had initially been referred to as a love marriage immediately changed after Sayali and Aatif’s wedding occurred when she claimed she was coerced to perform specific religious rituals as Aatif’s wife and subsequently endure the process of reconversion due to pressure Aatif applied throughout their marriage.
As time went on, Surve contended that Aatif’s coercive behavior grew increasingly intolerable to her, resulting in her ultimately having to remove herself from what had begun as an interfaith marriage.
Allegations of Harassment
Surve claims that she faced both physical and mental abuse since marrying Tase, and that she believes marrying him was her “largest life’s mistake,” Surve has four children, so she tried to maintain the marriage because of them.
Surve has contacted authorities on numerous occasions to report Tase’s abuse towards her and said that he did not receive any support from the police. When she reached all limits, Surve told the media that she would be leaving her husband.
