Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, is the first leader of a country in office to have more than 100 million Instagram followers. The big win shows how well known he is online and how famous he is around the world on one of the most important social media sites.
The number of people who follow Modi on Instagram has slowly grown since he joined in 2014. His account has a mix of official updates, sneak peeks from public events, trips abroad, culture celebrations and SECRET moments. His wide range of content has helped him connect with people all over the world, not just in India.
A Long Way Ahead of Other World Leaders
When you look at this accomplishment in light of other world leaders, it becomes clearer how big it is. Modi has more than twice as many fans as the next most popular politician in the world, Donald Trump, who has about 43 million followers.
There are a lot fewer people who follow other well known leaders like Prabowo Subianto, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Javier Milei. The next famous Indian leaders don’t have nearly as many fans as the most famous ones. About 16 million people follow Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the platform and about 12 million people follow Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Trump is in second place with 43.2 million fans, and Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia is in third place with 15 million. The president of Brazil is in fourth place with 14.4 million fans, and the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is in third place with 11.6 million. Last but not least, 6.4 million people follow Argentine President Javier Milei.
The big difference shows that Modi has a good handle on internet communication in the country. His plan for using social media has been a big part of how politicians talk to people today. It lets him talk to people directly instead of just using traditional media.

Putting together governance and personal link
Modi’s use of Instagram is a major reason he has so many fans. His posts are more than just official government news. A lot of the time, they include highlights from trips abroad, meetings with citizens and moments from national events. Having a mix of official and personal material helps him seem more approachable while still maintaining the authority of his position.
Using photos and short reels to tell stories on the site also helps leaders connect with younger people. Modi has kept people interested over the years by sharing frequently and using a variety of content.
There is a new era of political communication
Not only is getting over 100 million fans a big deal, but it also shows how political speech has changed in the digital age. Social media sites like Instagram have become strong ways for leaders to shape stories, share real time information and connect with the public directly.
Modi’s achievement sets a new standard for how world leaders should use social media.
