GATE is currently being conducted nationwide with thousands of engineering & science graduates taking the national level exams. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted rotationally by the IITs and is an entry point for both post-graduate admissions and Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) recruitment.
GATE Purpose and Importance
The purpose of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and its importance is to assess a candidate’s knowledge of engineering, technology, architecture, science and humanities at the undergraduate level. A GATE score is required for admission into MTech, ME or PhD programmes in IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutions. Many PSUs also consider GATE test scores for recruitment; therefore, GATE is an extremely competitive exam.
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 will be conducted in Computer‑Based Test (CBT) mode on the following dates:
- February 07, 2026 (Saturday)
- February 08, 2026 (Sunday)
- February 14, 2026 (Saturday)
- February 15, 2026 (Sunday)
Exam sessions are spread over these four days, with papers scheduled in two shifts each day:
- Forenoon Shift: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM
- Afternoon Shift: 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM
GATE Examination Pattern and Mode
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) will be administered in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode across multiple sessions. The GATE examination contains three types of questions; these are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). The GATE examination period is three hours in total and the overall marks available for any indicated subject is 100. Each subject paper has a General Aptitude section while there are also separate subject specific papers without a General Aptitude section.
Official Guidelines for Candidates
Since candidates are sitting for the GATE exams, they must adhere to the prescribed guidelines of conduct by the relevant authority. For entry into an examination centre, candidates must present their valid admission card and an original government-issued photograph ID. Candidates are prohibited from utilising any electronic device, including mobile phones, smartwatches, calculators and Bluetooth devices while in the exam room. However, candidates will have access to virtual calculators embedded in the computer screen while taking the examination.
Biometric and security checks will be conducted in order to ensure a fair examination. Candidates should arrive at the examination centre well in advance of their report time so that they can complete the security and verification process.
Preparation strategy for ongoing exams
There will likely be multiple days of examinations and therefore, candidates should continue to make final adjustments to their preparation in advance of their scheduled examination. It is recommended that candidates concentrate on familiarising themselves with the core concepts, rather than attempting to learn new material at the last minute. Solving previous year’s question papers as well as doing mock or practice tests will assist candidates with their time management skills and will prepare them to take the exam.
The importance of reviewing prior formulas, making concise notes, and revising important concepts will play a significant role in this process. Candidates will also be able to evaluate previous examination sessions to determine the level of difficulty and what topics are relevant.
Stress and Wellness
The exam is going to be stressful, so candidates should adhere to a balanced lifestyle by making sure that they have adequate sleep, eat adequately, and take short breaks while studying to help alleviate any stress. It is just as critical to arrive mentally and physically prepared on the day of the examination as it is academically.
What’s Next?
Once all examinations have been completed, answer sheets and answer keys will be available for review so that candidates can estimate their score. In due course, final scores and GATE scorecards will be released, which will be used to determine eligibility for admission and recruitment through PSU’s.
The ongoing GATE examination process is a pivotal milestone in helping numerous candidates across India shape their academic & career paths.
