The grey and dull look of Mumbai’s highways have been transformed into beauties that would make you wonder if the picture was taken from a postcard because of the blooming of a Pink Trumpet Tree located in the city. Motorists and commuters were stunned by the magnificent sight of the delicate pink flowers covering the tree with splashes of colour contrasted to the concrete structures of flyovers, glass fronts and steel of the hundreds of vehicles travelling speedily below them. This was the perfect event for creating a moment for the large numbers of people who experience the thrill of seeing something so wonderfully different while travelling through their typical urban environment and struggling through their commute to work.
Within hours after the tree was found by random sources of social media, many images of this tree were sent throughout Instagram, X (Twitter) and various WhatsApp groups. Social media users compared the tree to cherry blossoms found in Japan and referred to the tree as being “Mumbai’s response to tourism” in the spring. The posts depicted urban nature and hidden gems of Mumbai as they were used to tag the images.
What Is the Pink Trumpet Tree?
The botanical name of the Pink Trumpet Tree is Tabebuia rosea (or Tabebuia avellanedae). This tree is from Central and South America but can also adapt to hot weather conditions like those of India. This tree generally flowers in late winter or early summer and loses its leaves before flowering, allowing the flowers to be more prominent, making them appear even more beautiful.
Why Is This Significant?
An increasing desire for public green spaces in large cities is highlighted by the response received. An urban ecologist commented that in our society, “people are thirsty for oasis opportunities of tranquillity and beauty.” The appearance of wildlife in an urban setting that is heavily developed is magical.

An Important Discussion about Urban Greenery
The tree’s increased attraction has led to discussions about maintaining the trees that are on roadways as well as introducing more flowering trees into these types of infrastructure projects. Citizens have taken to social media, asking for the conservation of the Pink Trumpet Tree and for the more thoughtful consideration of including greenery in urban roadway developments.
More Than Just a Viral Moment
At the end of the week, a single tree has turned into more than just a viral trend; it also became a representation for how a single tree has the ability to influence an entire city’s atmosphere. With rapid movement being typical for this area, the Pink Trumpet Tree provided an ideal place to show that nature continues to blossom, no matter where it may be growing – even next to a major freeway in Mumbai.
