Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a senior leader in Punjab’s Indian National Congress (INC), announced on Saturday that she is leaving the party as it continues to face difficulties due to infighting over its leadership. This announcement comes over a month after Dr. Sidhu was suspended from the party’s primary membership due to her ongoing differences with the INC’s leadership in Punjab. Dr. Sidhu, who is a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and Minister, was one of the most vocal members of the Punjab INC and has strongly opposed many of the wing’s organizational decisions and leadership appointments over the last few years.
Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s Criticism of the INC in Punjab
In her resignation announcement posted on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Dr. Sidhu made a scathing attack on Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the head of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), accusing him of destroying the fabric of the INC. She called him the “most horrible, incompetent, corrupt president in history” and that he had acted in collusion with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab by “selling the INC for personal, petty gain.”
In addition, she asserted that although she was subject to strict enforcement of party discipline, senior leaders who acted against her interests were “rewarded with major position.” She stated she had evidence against Mr. Warring, but decided to not present it; additionally, she stated she was leaving a party in which there was “no hope” for new leaders.
Historical Context: Suspended Again and Making Controversy
Dr. Sidhu’s departure comes after she was suspended from Congress in December of 2025 following a political uproar about statements that candidates could only be offered positions as CM of Punjab by bringing a “suitcase” with ₹500 crores. The backlash against her statements were very strong and led to many within the party being unhappy about her comments and receiving a public reprimand.
The suspension did not cite a specific reason, although many within the national party saw her remarks to be contrary to their principles of leadership and discipline within their party’s organisational structure.
Dr. Sidhu began her political career within the (BJP) and then moved to Congress, with her husband, who was a cricketer and former Punjab Chief of Congress, Navjot Singh Sidhu. Over the years, she has been known for speaking her mind regarding party matters and leadership.
Suresh Kalmadi, a veteran of Congress and a former union minister, has died at the age of 82.
Political Implications and Future Prospects
Analysts of political parties as well as insiders, see Sidhu’s leaving the Congress Party as a critical blow to the party’s ability to rebuild its organisation in the Punjab ahead of the next state and federal elections. Her blunt criticism of the provincial party leadership has highlighted horizontal divisions within the provincial Congress, as the party continues to struggle to put forth a cohesive effort against their principal adversaries, the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) and the BJP.
Sidhu has yet to formally declare if she will continue her political career or align with another political party; she has also indicated that her main interest is public service, although this too may be pursued through means that are not strictly political.
In addition, Sidhu has resigned while there are national party leaders visiting the province and while nationwide attention is being paid to the province’s future electoral politics.
Congress response and internal reactions
As of the time of writing the Congress Party leadership in the province has not issued a detailed statement regarding Sidhu’s resignation or related allegations. However, according to many congressmembers, Sidhu’s leaving the party will likely spur conversations concerning issues such as party discipline and leadership selection at both the province and national levels.
Whether this will lead to additional resignations in the future or if the party will realign its provincial leadership strategy is yet to be seen, but these are important points of discussion within the political community.
