Almost 5 years after it first changed the game when it comes to finding our lost keys, errant luggage, Apple has finally unveiled generation two of the AirTag. The latest version of the world’s best-selling item tracker, which went on sale Tuesday and was announced last month, is here to show us that while it may look familiar outside, we’re looking at a “new engine” under the hood for an increasingly mobile world.
The announcement comes as travel is rebounding and the “Find My” network has become a critical utility for millions. Zeroing in on some of the most requested improvements — longer range and a louder speaker, from what I gather — Apple isn’t just selling a device; it’s selling peace of mind.
The Force of the Second-Gen Ultra Wideband Chip
The greatest jump in the 2026 AirTag is Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. This is the exact same high-performance silicon used in the most recent iPhone 17 and since Apple Watch Series 11, its effects on findability are swift.
50% More Precision
“Precision Finding,” the function that gets you an arrow and a quantitative distance reading on your iPhone, just got a huge update. Apple says the new chip enables users to start Precision Finding from an additional 50 percent away than when using the original.
Picture that you have lost your wallet in a crowded park or some vast airport terminal. Where the old AirTag probably needed you to be within 30 or 40 feet to get a “lock,” the new model takes that digital handshake much further. This “expanded search bubble” results in aimless wandering taking less time and purpose-driven traveling to a location — guided by the sense of touch and visuals cues — taking longer.
(What Was Lost is Now Sound) The Speaker That’s 50% Louder
We’ve all been there: you’re sure your keys are in the living room, no doubt about it; cue sound…and nothing. The original AirTag’s speaker could be easily muffled by couch cushions, the pocket of a heavy coat or the bottom of a gym bag.
Apple engineers did this by re-engineering the internal acoustics. The new AirTag has a speaker that is 50 percent louder than its predecessor.
Dual-Distance Audibility: Apple says the device is now audible live from up to double its range in open areas.
Unique New Chimes: The update adds a new collection of high-pitched, melodic chirps crafted to cut through background noise such as TV chatter or street traffic.
Wrist-Based Tracking: Hunting for Apple Watch.3 Join us as we welcome Apple Watch to the lair.
For joggers and traveling light — that is, most AirTags users — the 2026 style features Precision Finding on Apple Watch.
Until now, if you wanted the “compass-style” guidance, you had to pull out your iPhone. Now Apple Watch Series 9 or later (and Ultra 2 or later) owners will be able to view the exact direction and distance to their AirTag right on their wrist. It’s a natural hands-free option for finding your bike on that crowded rack or even seeing if your luggage has made it to the plane when you are standing in line waiting for boarding.
Global Recovery: The Airline Partnership
More broadly, Apple is doubling down on human travel. The fresh AirTag also comes with support for “Share Item Location” feature.
Apple has partnered with over 50 major airlines for this, such as Delta, United and Lufthansa but also Singapore Airlines. If your bag gets lost, you can create a secure but temporary link that lets airline customer service representatives view the AirTag’s location on a map. This combination has helped expedite baggage recovery times dramatically, and can change what most travelers dread into something much more manageable.
Privacy, Security, and Sustainability
Alongside this release, Apple has continued its push for privacy. The 2026 AirTag still employs end-to-end encryption — not even Apple knows where your keys are.
Enhanced Anti-Stalking
To let someone know you didn’t mean to stalk them, the noisier speaker doubles a safeguard. The louder chime helps people get the notice more quickly that an unknown AirTag is moving with them if they don’t own one. Here, too, the Bluetooth identifiers are rotated more frequently in order to prevent “digital shadowing.”
A Greener Footprint
Continuing its pledge to be completely carbon neutral by 2030, the new AirTag is Apple’s most environmentally responsible tracker so far:
- 85% of recycled plastic in the casing.
- 100% recycled gold in the plating of the circuit boards.
- 100% fiber based packaging, no plastic wrap.
Pricing and Availability
In an unusual twist for a tech upgrade, Apple has maintained the same price point as it did when it first launched in 2021.
- Single Pack: $29 (₹3,790 in India)
- Four-Pack: $99 (₹12,900 in India)
Orders began on Monday, 26 January 2026 and retail availability starting on Wednesday, 28 January. Also, as always, you can personalize your AirTag with free custom engraving at Apple.com/airtag and for just $9, enjoy a range of new AirTag accessories, including the Leather Key Ring and Leather Loop in five colors.
The AirTag isn’t a reinvention of the wheel — it’s a perfecting of that wheel. By paying attention to the physical realities of searching for things in the world — sound and distance — Apple has articulated that “lost” is really just a state that lasts for seconds.
