The future cricket stars are set to be unveiled and get into high action mode as the India U19 team kick start their South Africa tour on Saturday, January 3, 2026,. This three-match Youth ODI series has been described as the ‘final dress rehearsal’ for next month’s 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup which will take place in Zimbabwe and Namibia from January 15.
With the pressure of the big stage being off in this series, it has allowed the “Boys in Blue” a key chance to acclimatize on these Highveld bouncy tracks.
The Vaibhav Suryavanshi Era Begins
The most written line in the lead up to the first Youth ODI is about India’s captaincy. There’s one with the eye-catching name of 14-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who has been named captain for this tour, a decision that has made cricket fans around the world sit up and take notice. Suryavanshi, who made headlines last month when he accounted for the youngest purchase in an IPL auction ever, will lead his side in place of injured regular captain Ayush Mhatre and vice-captain Vihaan Malhotra.
The sense of history accompanying Suryavanshi’s captaincy debut is palpable but the job ahead isn’t going to be easy. Coaching a bunch of teenagers in an intense environment such as Benoni demands a tactical maturity well above his years. He will be complemented by vice-captain Aaron George and a relatively inexperienced line-up that has promising players such as Mohamed Enaan and Abhigyan Kundu.

The Road to the U19 World Cup
This series is not about winning games for the Indian team as much as it is about finding a combination. I am sure the team will be trying to put a difficult loss against Pakistan in the Asia Cup final behind them last month.
The South Africans, led by Muhammad Bulbulia, will be no minnows either. They have a reputation to reclaim on home turf and they will be looking to take advantage of the extra bounce that Willowmoore Park offers to strike early into India’s top order. Head to head: India have dominated this duel over the years, with 19 wins in the 25 U19 matches played between the two teams. But Benoni, a pitch that provides early lateral movement of the ball, has brought the two sides level just a bit.
Following this series, India will tour Zimbabwe before they defend the World Cup in New Zealand where hosts club them with USA and Bangladesh in a group.
