When it comes to Indian cricket, few voices are as influential as that of Kapil Dev in the high pressure environment. The Haryana Hurricane has set off a storm across cricketland with his recent assessment of India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir. In the wake of a difficult time for the country’s side (which included a recent lost Test series against South Africa), India’s 1983 World Cup winning captain has indicated that we should retire calling Gambhir, ahem, “coach” altogther.

But let it not be a reflection on Gambhir’s credentials. To Kapil Dev, however, the international term has long since ceased to have a specific meaning. Gambhir isn’t — and shouldn’t be, a coach, he’s and has to be, a Manager.”
THE MYTH OF “Technical” INTERNATIONAL COACH
Addressing here at the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Centenary Session, Kapil Dev explained why coaching has changed in today’s world. His thinking is straightforward: by the time an Indian player makes it to the national team, they are already a master of their craft.
Kapil stressed it was not realistic to have one man serving as a technical “coach” to a set of world class specialists. The point: of course an international head coach doesn’t need to teach a professional cricketer how to bowl a googly or keep wickets; their role is to get the player into the right mental space so those skills are performed under pressure.

From Patel to ‘Comfort’: The Art of Man-Management
The transformation from “Coaching” to “Managing” is more than a title change; it represents an entirely new mindset. At the highest level, I feel leadership is more about giving psychological security rather than counter measures or technical tweaks,” Kapil Dev said.
With India suffering a dip in form in the recent times, critics have questioned some of Gambhir’s on field management decisions– mainly his constant changes in the playing XI and dependence on part time bowlers. But Kapil Dev deflected to the ‘Comfort Factor’ topic.
Kapil’s Core Management Principles:
Cheerleading Over Coaching: A manager’s job is more about telling a ballplayer, “You can do it,” and not so much about, “No, hold your elbow like this.”
Building Confidence: The manager is the source of approval for less experiemced players. You give a player some trust and the player gives you back that performance.”
The “Lean Phase” Support: In an indication of what is his own famous style of captaincy, Kapil said a leader needs to invest more time in the players not in form.
For that there are many people,” Kapil added. “I find there’s still plenty for me to learn as a captain and it would be nice, I think, if you get guys who are not playing drinking or having dinner together. You have to give them that confidence.”
Gambhir Under Pressure in 2026
Gautam Gambhir’s stint has been a roller-coaster ride of aggressive intent and rough returns. And although he has taken India to some striking white-ball triumphs, he has found the Test game a more brutal mistress. If anything, the heat has been increased by two recent defeats in South Africa (0-2) and home to New Zealand.
By describing Gambhir as a “manager” Kapil Dev is, in fact, coming to the defence of the stylish left-hander while also raising the bar on his achievements. He is implying that the legacy of Gambhir will not be in terms of “technical” lessons, but how he handles egos, insecurities and unbelievable pressures of a billion expectations.
A Model of Leader Development for the New Century
Kapil’s take mirrors a global trend that sports today has more of Gaffer (we prefer Head Coach) and less the Head Coach, with specialist coaches like bowling, batting and fielding taking care of all coaching up to even Mental Conditioning.
As India head towards a pile-up of 2026 (the packed calendar), all eyes are going to be on whether this “Manager” Gambhir the task ahead. Can he gift that, the “comfort” that Kapil is talking about? Can he continue to build a side where players feel safe amid the “musical chairs” of selection?
The legendary allrounder has set the tone. Now, it is Gambhirs turn to show that he indeed is 100% manager material for this Indian team.twimg.com/embed.
