The announcement of Pokémon Legends: Z-A has sent the community into a frenzy of speculation. With the return to the urban sprawl of Lumiose City and the resurgence of Mega Evolution, players are eager to see how regional variants and unique evolutions from other generations will be integrated into the “Mega Dimension.” Among the most sought-after spirits is Runerigus, the Grudge Pokémon.
Originally discovered in the Galar region, Runerigus is a Ground/Ghost-type powerhouse known for its high defensive stats and its haunting, slab-like appearance. In the context of Legends: Z-A, obtaining this ancient entity requires a mix of exploration, tactical combat, and a bit of Kalosian flair.

The Mystery of the Lumiose Underground
In Legends: Z-A, the developers have hinted at a massive redevelopment of Lumiose City. This includes a sprawling network of catacombs and ancient ruins buried beneath the chic boulevards. This is where your journey for Runerigus begins.
Unlike traditional Pokémon games, the Legends series often replaces trade evolutions and specific location triggers with Environmental Milestones. To get Runerigus, you first need to capture its base form: Galarian Yamask.
In the Mega Dimension, Galarian Yamask can be found haunting the Submerged Sector—a dark, damp area of the city’s underground where ancient stonework meets modern drainage. They are attracted to “Negative Energy” spots, often appearing near broken statues or discarded construction materials.
Step 1: The Trial of the Spirit
Once you have secured a Galarian Yamask, the evolution process pays homage to its original Sword & Shield requirements but adds a “Mega” twist. You cannot simply use an item; you must prove the Pokémon’s resilience.
- Sustain Damage: You must enter a battle within the Lumiose Catacombs and have your Galarian Yamask take at least 49 HP of damage in a single encounter without fainting.
- The Survival Instinct: In Legends: Z-A, this is easier to track via the “Condition” tab in your Satchel. Ensure you have plenty of Potions on hand, but do not heal the Yamask until the battle is over.
Step 2: The Stone Architecture Trigger
In Galar, you had to walk under a specific stone arch in the Dusty Bowl. In the reconstructed Lumiose City, the “Arch” has been reimagined. You must travel to the Preservation District, an area of the city where the Z-A redevelopment project has unearthed ancient Kalosian monoliths.
Look for the “Geosenge Remnant”—a jagged, upright stone structure that resembles the ancient stones found in Geosenge Town. While your Yamask is at low health (from the 49+ HP damage taken), walk beneath the shadow cast by this monolith during the Night cycle.
Step 3: The Evolution
If the conditions are met—the damage sustained and the location reached under the cover of darkness—the prompt to evolve will appear in your party menu. Upon confirming, the spirit within the mask will bind itself to the surrounding ancient masonry, transforming into the formidable Runerigus.
Why Runerigus is a Must-Have
In the “Mega Dimension” of Lumiose City, Runerigus serves a vital role. Its Wandering Spirit ability is a hard counter to many Mega-Evolved threats, as it swaps abilities upon contact. With the sheer power of Mega Pokémon roaming the streets, having a tank that can neutralize a Mega Mewtwo or Mega Lucario’s signature ability is a game-changer.Furthermore, Runerigus’s access to moves like Shadow Ball, Earthquake, and the new Urban Ambush makes it a versatile defender in both the main story and high-level post-game challenges.
