Speculation is rife in Tamil Nadu’s political scene about K. Annamalai, the ex-President of BJP Tamil Nadu, leaving the BJP for good to start up his new political party. While no formal announcement has been made as yet by Annamalai on the possibility of a new party, there are several recent media reports and events which have added a sense of urgency to the situation regarding Annamalai’s future within the BJP.
Delhi Visit Leads to Speculation About Political Exit
Annamalai’s trip to Delhi is where the current speculation about his plans began, as he is believed to be having discussions with BJP National President Nitin Nabin, and other senior party members, to discuss his position in the BJP. Sources say that Annamalai has more than likely already made up his mind to leave the BJP party, and he will announce his decision during the scheduled meetings while in Delhi.
His vague response to reporters when asked if he would leave the BJP to start his own party, “I will be addressing you guys again in two days, so stay tuned,” is something anyone following current events in Tamil Nadu will find helpful.
Reports Claim New Political Party Is Being Planned
Various media sources have indicated that Annamalai is contemplating creating a new regional political party in Tamil Nadu; posters backing Annamalai have reportedly emerged throughout the city of Coimbatore with requests asking him to claim a broader role as a leader. Supporters on social media have also discussed possible names and images for a future political affiliation to promote Annamalai.
BJP insiders have suggested that Annamalai perceives a lack of political room for him under the current arrangement of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, with some claiming that he was offered a Rajya Sabha position and declined due to wishing to pursue something different inside the political sphere.

What Sparked the Rumours?
The rumours did not happen overnight, rather leading political observers maintain that numerous recent developments had previously indicated growing disagreement between Annamalai and elements of the BJP leadership.
The first individual consideration is the changing of Tamil Nadu’s BJP chief during the last year whereupon Annamalai shifted to a low profile and did not seek candidacy for Tamil Nadu’s 2026 Assembly races. His name was notably absent from the list of suggested BJP candidates which took many of his supporters by surprise as they perceived him to be one of the only credible BJP leaders in the State.
The most recent instance of Annamalai’s public opposition to certain elements of the Centre’s implementation of the three-language policy in CBSE schools was striking because it differed from the BJP’s general position. Some analysts interpreted this as a sign that he was attempting to better align with the regional sentiments of Tamil Nadu.
Impact on Tamil Nadu Politics
In addition, if Annamalai were to leave the BJP, it would change the political landscape of Tamil Nadu considerably. The BJP has yet to become a major political force in Tamil Nadu, and Annamalai is one of the most recognizable leaders in that party. His aggressive style of campaigning, in addition to his strong social media presence, has helped to raise the visibility of the party, though the BJP has yet to experience substantial electoral success.
The timing of Annamalai’s potential departure from the BJP would also be significant. Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is going through a period of transition, with a number of relatively newer parties attempting to challenge the older, more established political parties in Tamil Nadu. If Annamalai formed a new political party, it is likely to appeal to some of the younger and/or disenfranchised voters and supporters who may be searching for a new political party. At the same time, many observers suggest that because of Annamalai’s past association with the BJP, it may be difficult for him to establish an entirely separate identity.

BJP Yet to Issue Official Response
The BJP has not yet acknowledged that Annamalai has resigned from his position; most reports have come from sources’ speculations or through politics. The BJP powerbrokers plan to meet with Annamalai in New Delhi to discuss his situation and to decide on an appropriate course of action.
At this date, the situation is still in flux, but Annamalai has indicated that within the next few days he will have more clarity over how he will proceed. For the time being, political observers in Tamil Nadu, as well as BJP supporters and other political opponents, will be carefully observing to see what Annamalai does next. The actions taken by Annamalai, whether he stays with the BJP or attempts to start a new political party, will likely have a major impact on the future of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
