According to tech trackers, it appears that the messaging app WhatsApp may launch a new premium subscription option called “WhatsApp Plus”. If this premium subscription option is available, you will be able to customize your experience and have access to exclusive premium membership features as long as you pay for this premium service while keeping the majority of the basic features free for all users (including free messaging).
This would represent a possible shift in how WhatsApp (owned by Meta Platforms) will generate money based on its huge customer base worldwide.
Free vs Paid Version
Reports indicate that WhatsApp Plus will not take the place of the current free version of WhatsApp, but will be offered as an additional subscription to users who want to use additional features to enhance the look and feel of their apps, as well as the use of chat management tools in their apps.
All of the core features of WhatsApp such as sending messages, making voice or video calls, and sending media files will remain free for all users of the free version of WhatsApp. However, if you become a member of WhatsApp Plus, you will be able to use the premium app and access additional features and other customisation features not available to those who do not have a premium membership.
This model mirrors the “freemium” model of various digital platforms where basic service is provided free of charge while advanced services may be provided through a subscription fee.

Possible Features of WhatsApp Plus
While there has been no confirmation from the company of all the aforementioned features, several have been found in early beta builds.
Possibly one of the biggest features to be delivered with the subscription is the ability to pin up to 20 chats on the screen at the same time, compared to only 3 in the standard application. This will assist customers with tracking their most important messages.
Additional features that subscribers will likely receive include advanced customisation tools. There are reports that subscribers of the premium tier may be able to choose from various themes, accent colours, and approximately 14 different app icons, thereby giving them numerous options for customising the appearance of the messaging platform.
According to reports, possible additional items could include:
- Exclusive sticker packs
- Unique notification sounds/ringtones
- Subscribers can react/chat differently
These anticipated expansions are aimed at personalising and enhancing the user’s messaging experience.
No Pricing or Launch Date Announced
At the present time, Meta Platforms or WhatsApp have yet to officially confirm a price or release date for the subscription service.
The discoveries that were noted in the beta builds of the application indicate that the subscription is still being developed.
If the subscription is introduced, it may first be evaluated in a limited number of countries prior to widespread roll-out.

Part of Meta’s Bigger Monetisation Strategy
It’s possible that WhatsApp Plus will be the latest step in Meta’s long-term strategy of adding paid features to all their services (like WhatsApp and Messenger) outside traditional advertising models in order to generate money through new revenue sources, while providing added benefits to high-volume users of their products.
Warning About Unofficial “WhatsApp Plus” Apps
According to industry experts, implementing this strategy has the potential to further Monetize Meta’s 2 billion+ global WhatsApp subscribers, while ensuring that the core WhatsApp service remains free for all users.
There are considerable concerns from experts about the current proliferation of unofficial “WhatsApp Plus” APKs. These unofficial APKs are not authorized by the developers of WhatsApp and could inadvertently introduce users to serious security issues, including the loss of personal data or the uploading of malware to the user’s device.
What It Means for Users?
If a subscription service was provided via a standalone WhatsApp app, it would be part of the overall WhatsApp ecosystem, which includes the platform’s existing end-to-end encryption technology and security features.
The implementation of a paid version of the WhatsApp app, if it occurs, would represent a significant consumer-facing step forward for WhatsApp. Most WhatsApp users would see no change to their normal use of the app on a daily basis; however, if someone wishes to take advantage of additional customization options, improved chat management and other premium features, an upgraded subscription service will likely be made available, thereby establishing a new paradigm for generating revenue from mobile messaging apps.
