WhatsApp is introducing a significant update for iPad users by allowing the messaging app to be set up as a primary device instead of only functioning in companion mode. The new feature removes several existing limitations and is currently being released gradually through the latest iPadOS version of the app.
WhatsApp Brings Primary Device Support to iPad
WhatsApp has started rolling out a new update that enables users to register their WhatsApp account directly on an iPad. Previously, iPad users could only access the platform through companion mode, which required linking the tablet to an Android smartphone or iPhone by scanning a QR code.
With the latest update, users can make the iPad their primary WhatsApp device instead of relying on a connected smartphone.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is being introduced gradually through WhatsApp for iPadOS version 26.25.74.

How the New Setup Process Works
Configuring WhatsApp on an iPad as a primary device follows the same process used on smartphones.
Users need to:
- Enter their country code and mobile number.
- Receive and enter a six-digit verification code.
- Complete account registration.
Those who have already enabled a passkey for their WhatsApp account can use it instead of the verification code, providing a faster and more secure sign-in experience.

Companion Mode Restrictions Are Removed
Until now, companion mode offered a convenient way to use WhatsApp on an iPad but came with several functional limitations.
Features Previously Unavailable
Users operating WhatsApp in companion mode could not:
- Share live location.
- Create or view broadcast lists.
- Communicate with businesses using Flows.
Another limitation required users to open WhatsApp on their primary phone at least once every 14 consecutive days. If they failed to do so, WhatsApp automatically logged out all linked devices, including the iPad.
With primary device support enabled, these restrictions no longer apply. Live location sharing becomes available, broadcast lists can be accessed, and users no longer face automatic logouts caused by inactivity on a linked phone.

Companion Mode Will Continue to Be Available
Despite adding primary device functionality, WhatsApp is not removing companion mode.
Users who prefer to keep their smartphone as the main device can continue using the iPad as a secondary linked device. During the initial setup on iPad, WhatsApp will present both options, allowing users to choose between registering the tablet as a primary device or linking it as a companion.
Those who already use WhatsApp on their iPad in companion mode do not need to make any changes.
Gradual Rollout Underway
The new primary device feature is currently available to a limited number of users and is expected to reach more accounts over the coming weeks as the rollout expands.
Conclusion
WhatsApp’s latest iPad update gives users the flexibility to register their accounts directly on the tablet without depending on a smartphone. While companion mode remains available for those who prefer it, primary device support removes several long-standing limitations and provides a more complete WhatsApp experience on iPad.
