Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is still known for its grandeur, feelings, and unforgettable music more than 20 years after it came out. But behind the shiny frames is a less well-known production story that came to light lately thanks to director Nikkhil Advani. He said that the movie didn’t start out with a very big budget. Karan Johar, the director, and his team told Yash Johar, the producer, that they thought the whole movie could be made for about 3 crore rupees. Yash Johar immediately agreed to pay the amount because he believed in the vision and drive of his young team.
But that trust was put to the test almost right away. Bole Chudiyan, one of the most famous songs in Bollywood history, was the first scene of the movie. It wasn’t a quiet conversation scene or a simple opening. What happened next was a level of production that no one had fully planned for.
It turns into a big show in “Bole Chudiyan”
Everything was spent on the Bole Chudiyan song so that it would look like a party. The set had huge rooms, lots of decorations, and huge lights that were made just for it. The shoot had almost 200 dancers and about 300 young performers, making it one of the busiest and most complicated song scenes of its time.
The team was also hurt by the size. Nikkhil Advani remembered that the shoot made him very tired. Karan Johar is said to have passed out on set from the stress and long hours, and Kajol had a hard time carrying her heavy outfit during the dance number. The team kept going even though things were crazy because they were driven to make something great.
As soon as the song was over, the truth hit hard. The whole 3 crore fund that was supposed to go to making the whole movie was spent on just shooting Bole Chudiyan.

How calmly Yash Johar dealt with the budget shock
When Yash Johar asked the team about the movie’s budget over tea, that was the real turning point. Nikkhil Advani said he couldn’t even remember the exact name of the person at that time. Then Yash Johar looked at the budget and saw that it was already gone.
Instead of getting angry or scared, Yash Johar did something strange. Then he tore up the paper with the budget information and told the team to just make the movie. There were no lessons, maths, or threats. There was only faith. Advani says that moment marked a group of directors who cared more about films than numbers.

Then vs Now: How Film Culture Has Changed
Nikkhil Advani thought about what happened and compared the way films were made in the past to how they are made now. He said that planning the budget, getting approvals, and making financial predictions for current films can take months before the camera starts running. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, on the other hand, was driven by gut, emotion, and pure desire.
Advani also said that Yash Johar was the most dedicated filmmaker ever. He was willing to risk money to tell a story, which showed a deep love for pictures that he thinks is uncommon these days. Still, he thinks that directors like Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra are continuing that tradition by finding a balance between big budget films and films that make you feel things.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham became one of Bollywood’s most famous family stories, even though it had a rough start. Bole Chudiyan, the song that almost ruined the budget, is still one of its most popular tracks, showing that emotion does pay off sometimes.
