One of the senior BCCI officials has made it clear that the move by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to participate in domestic cricket this season was made solely by the two players themselves, without any influence from the board or the national selectors.
The comment was made in the second ODI between India and South Africa in Raipur after it was reported that Kohli would play the Vijay Hazare tournament. The official was questioned point-blank whether the BCCI had pressured the top two, but he replied: They have made up their minds, it is their decision.

Board Backs Senior Players’ Judgement
The official continued that the board is aware of the worth of the two greats of the modern age, and they have confidence in themselves in terms of work load, preparation and readiness. However, unlike what the masses might think where the chief selector and head coach make all the key decisions, the official pointed out that it is still the BCCI that makes the policy, but does not meddle in the domestic activities of all players.
The explanation comes in the face of the continued speculation amongst the general populace, whether or not India should involve its age-oldest cricketers in domestic events more often as an aspect of succession planning.
Selectors’ Press Conference Raised Questions
The future of Rohit and Kohli came under greater speculation after the press conference of chief selector Ajit Agarkar in Ahmedabad, now before the visit to Australia in October-November. When responding to a question on what is planned, Agarkar had mentioned Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma, which was interpreted to mean that India can consider younger options.
Agarkar had also mentioned that the involvement in domestic cricket would be compulsory in the future, and people would tend to forget how good Jaiswal is. The remarks created the impression that the two elder batters could be considered in terms of tour-by-tour evaluation.
Response With Player-of-the-Series Awards
Both Rohit and Kohli replied and answered where it is most needed, i.e. in the field. Rohit who played as the captain in Australia, won a Player-of-the-Series award, with a half-century and an unbeaten hundred. Kohli responded with successive two ODI centuries against South Africa and a match-winning unbeaten 65 off 45 balls.
Their performances cemented their spots ahead of the busy white-ball timetable next year and alleviated most of the speculation about their global destinations.
Gambhir Praises Experience and Influence
Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India who has overseen the recent white-ball recovery, has admitted the value of the older duo following the ODI series victory, which he described as having been important in the dressing room.
It is something that they have been doing for a long time, Gambhir said. Hopefully, they can carry on with the same in the 50-over format. They will be valuable in their experience.
Futures Back in Their Hands
At the beginning of the season, the inquiries about the long-term international prospects of both Rohit and Kohli were common. However, with the progress of the season, good performances and fitness have put them squarely back into their own paths.
Board officials quietly admit that the two seniors still define performance standards and fitness benchmarks, and that the decision to go beyond them is not immediate in ODIs.
Vijay Hazare Trophy Draws Attention
In the meantime, the Vijay Hazare Trophy itself is taking shape as one of the most followed domestic events in recent years, enhanced by the presence of the biggest names in Indian cricket. Some of the younger players see the availability of Rohit and Kohli as a chance to learn firsthand from two of the most successful cricketers in the present day.
At this point, the two are also considered vital on the field and strong off it – and by the admission of the BCCI, they are in a commanding position to determine when and where they play.
