Persistent rain forced the first T20 International between India and England to be abandoned on Wednesday (July 1, 2026) after India posted 189/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Before the weather halted play, captain Shreyas Iyer and Abhishek Sharma produced impressive half-centuries to lift the visitors to a competitive total.
Rain Ends Opening T20I Without a Result
Rain arrived towards the closing stages of India’s innings and continued to intensify, preventing England from beginning their chase.
With just over 40 minutes remaining before the cut-off time for a five-over contest, the umpires decided to abandon the match.
The second T20I of the five-match series is scheduled to be played in Manchester on July 4.
Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer Power India to 189/7
After choosing to bat first, India recovered strongly from an early setback to finish with 189 for seven in 20 overs. The performance marked a significant improvement after the team’s two disappointing batting displays during the recent 0-2 T20I series defeat against Ireland.
Early Wickets Put India Under Pressure
India’s innings began poorly as Sanju Samson was caught by Tom Banton at point after driving Saqib Mahmood (3/33), while Ishan Kishan was run out following a mix-up with Abhishek Sharma when the score was just six.
Kishan’s dismissal mirrored the run-out that ended his innings during the second T20I against Ireland in Belfast.

Abhishek Sharma’s Aggressive Knock Changes the Momentum
Abhishek quickly shifted the momentum with an attacking approach against England’s pace attack.
He punished Luke Wood and Saqib Mahmood, with Mahmood conceding boundaries of 4, 6, 6, while Shreyas Iyer also added a four as India collected 21 runs in the fourth over.
Mahmood attempted to trouble Abhishek with short-pitched deliveries, but the left-hander responded confidently with two well-executed pull shots.
The pair then built an 82-run partnership for the third wicket in just over seven overs.
Abhishek also struck Luke Wood for three consecutive fours, helping India reach 61/2 in the powerplay.
The 25-year-old completed his half-century in just 20 balls, but was dismissed soon after when Sam Curran trapped him leg before wicket.
Shreyas Iyer Anchors the Innings
While Abhishek dominated early, Shreyas Iyer played the role of the anchor and registered his ninth T20I half-century, which was also his first as India’s captain.
He focused on rotating the strike and finding gaps while allowing other batters to play attacking shots.
Shreyas also produced several eye-catching strokes, including a pull for four off Adil Rashid and a towering six over extra cover against Luke Wood.
He reached his fifty from 38 deliveries, bouncing back after two modest performances against Ireland.
His innings ended shortly after the milestone when Saqib Mahmood dismissed him leg before wicket with India on 165.
Shivam Dube Provides Late Acceleration
With India seeking a strong finish, Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 42 from 21 balls.
His late contribution helped India score 54 runs in the final five overs after the middle overs, between the eighth and 14th over, saw the visitors struggle to find boundaries.
Dube’s unbeaten knock carried India close to the 190-run mark, a total that appeared capable of testing England under the overcast conditions in Durham.
Match Officially Called Off
Despite India’s competitive total, the weather denied spectators the opportunity to witness England’s reply.
As heavy rain continued, the umpires officially abandoned the match before a shortened five-over contest could begin.
Brief Scores
India: 189/7 in 20 overs
- Abhishek Sharma: 59
- Shreyas Iyer: 68
- Shivam Dube: 42*
- Saqib Mahmood: 3/33

Conclusion
India’s top order showed encouraging signs of improvement, with Abhishek Sharma and Shreyas Iyer leading the recovery after early wickets before Shivam Dube finished strongly. However, relentless rain ensured the opening match of the England-India T20I series ended without a result, leaving both teams to look ahead to the second fixture in Manchester.
