New money for the BRICS?
Over the past two years, there have been many rumours about a possible option to the US dollar, but the BRICS countries have not officially said anything about it. There was more talk when a picture of Vladimir Putin carrying a sample “BRICS banknote” at the Kazan Summit in October 2024. Since then, top officials have made it clear that the bloc has no plans to start using a new currency right away.
The de-dollarization debate reached its peak at the BRICS Summit in 2024, when Putin took the stage and showed what appeared to be a sample BRICS note. But he later softened his earlier strong push for less reliance on the dollar. He made it clear that the goal is not to get rid of the SWIFT system, which is built on the US dollar. Instead, the goal is to stop the dollar from being used as a “weapon” by making other ways for BRICS countries and their partners to do business across borders using their own currencies.
It’s not that we don’t want to use the dollar, but what can we do if they won’t let us? Then we have to find other options, which is what Putin said would happen.
