Pune Airport is great news for the airport’s region because it will now have 15 additional flight slots to operate by May 1, 2026. This is due to additional approval granted by the Indian Air Force for expanded use of the airport, increasing zero of the airport’s operational slots from two hundred twenty to two hundred thirty-five.
As a result, this will significantly improve connectivity between Pune and various parts of the country, reduce congestion at the airport and spur an increase in the demand for economic growth around Pune (one of the fastest growing cities in the State of Maharashtra).
Capacity Expansion After Long Wait
Pune Airport’s capacity has increased significantly after years of trying to obtain additional flight slots, which will allow airlines more options to either add new routes to their offerings and/or provide additional frequency to existing flights. Many of the newly added slots were either not used previously or could not be used due to a lack of facilities and/or schedules; however, they will now be added to the summer schedule as additional flights in addition to existing flights on existing routes.

New Routes to Strengthen Connectivity
The expansion of Pune Airport’s operating capacity will allow for many new domestic flights to be introduced on Pune to other major cities’ domestic networks, and will allow the launch of new routes between Pune and key regional locations in the region. Some of the first new flights added to the schedule that will be available for passengers travelling from Pune include flights between Pune and Tirupati, via Solapur, Mangaluru, and Bagdogra.
The main objective with the new flights is to improve regional access and connectivity to major markets in India. Pune will benefit greatly from increased volume and frequency of air travel from other Indian cities due to the availability of new flights and slot availability in and out of Pune. Because of the increased volume of flights into Pune, airlines will have increased opportunities for business travellers and tourist customers.

Increased Frequency on Existing Routes
Airlines will be able to provide more frequent flights to some existing cities such as Bangalore, Kolkata and Varanasi owing to the increase in capacity that is being provided via the additional available slots for flights into Pune which is expected to assist in increasing the volume and frequency of all business and tourism related travel in and out of Pune.
Passengers will have extra options for travel and flexibility when there are peak times to travel through the airports. Having many flights available all day long on popular routes is probably going to help with the issue of ticket availability and could also help with stabilizing the airfares.

Improvements to infrastructure to facilitate continued growth
To help facilitate the growth in flight operations, Pune Airport is currently making improvements to their other infrastructure including building a new security hold area and expanding their passenger facilities.
These improvements are essential to manage the increased amount of passengers and also to continue operating a seamless airport experience. The airport currently handles both domestic and limited international traffic and they will need capacity improvements in order to accommodate the ever increasing demand for these types of flights.
Pune’s role as an aviation hub has strengthened
The addition of 15 new flights makes Pune an even more emerging Civil Aviation Hub in western India. By providing better transportation linkages to tier-II and tier-III cities, Pune International Airport has provided a means by which to close regional gaps and improve balanced overall development.
Now, it would be indicative of the increasing importance of India’s secondary cities in the overall Civil Aviation Sector, with demand on the rise, beyond Metro Airports.
Looking Ahead
From May 1, 2026 onward, with the introduction of new routes, customers will receive improved connectivity and additional travel choices as a result of the ability to offer expansion of operations this way. As such, relief from the chronic backlog of capacity constraints at Pune Airport will be facilitated and this will be necessary for meeting Pune’s continuing demand for air transportation options.
Due to additional infrastructure upgrades and possibly future expansions, Pune will see ongoing development of its aviation network for many years to come.
