The T20 World Cup has been held since its first tournament in 2007. As a result of this, it has become one of the biggest global sporting events in cricket. The T20 World Cup is held every two years on average, although there have been a few exceptions to this timeframe. Players and teams are not only working hard to try and achieve championship success, but also strive to leave their mark in the annals of cricket history.
The upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup will mark the first World Cup tournament since the T20 format was introduced in 2007, and there have only been a couple of players to have ever been on two championship teams; consecutive championship wins, or multiple championship wins (in T20I) are extremely rare for teams/players within this format.
Players That Have Won Two T20 World Cups
Listed below is the definitive list of players that won two T20 World Cups by teams they were on (West Indies, 2012 and 2016):
The West Indies have seen multiple players achieve dual titles due to their ability to dominate the tournament by winning back-to-back championships. The following are examples of the players who were members of both championship teams:
- Daren Sammy – Captain of the West Indies on two occasions; first to captain a team and win the T20 World Cup twice in history,
- Chris Gayle – The “Universe Boss” was a key contributor in each of the two tournaments and was the main reason for the West Indies’ success,
- Marlon Samuels – One of the best batsmen; key to both tournaments because he delivered wins through his extraordinary play,
- Johnson Charles – Made an impact to his team by playing well at the T20 tournaments,
- Dwayne Bravo – Played a significant role as an all-around performer on each championship team,
- Samuel Badree – As a leg spin bowler had a positive effect on games and helped the West Indies win in both cases,
- Andre Russell – His power hitting and bowling helped propel the West Indies to two T20 World Championships,
- Denesh Ramdin – A veteran wicket keeper whose experience helped solidify the two winning teams.
Players from the Caribbean who played for the West Indies have established the West Indies as a powerhouse during a prosperous era of West Indies Cricket and referred to as the “T20 World Champions Era.” India is a two-time t20 World Cup champion (2007, 2024).
Despite being the only member of this group not representing the Caribbean Islands, he has been part of the Indian National Cricket Side which won both the T20 World Cups, held in 2007 and in 2014. Rohit Sharma was also captain at the time of the 2024 T20 World Cup victory.
Although India previously won a T20 World Cup, the accomplishments include 2 players who cannot be counted as part of both World Cups; therefore, Rohit Sharma has been an indelible fixture of the Indian Side due to his unique position within the list based upon duration playing as an international cricketer.

Notes About Other Teams Who Have Won T20 World Cups
Although England also won their T20 World Cup on two occasions (2010-2014 and 2022-2024), no player who played for the qualified teams in either England T20 World Championship would have ever played on these teams due to the time span (12 years) which separated these two championships.
While India is the only country represented by only one representative on both of India’s World Cup championship teams, players like Virat Kohli have had great success in World Cups as far as individual accomplishment but only winning one T20 and only winning the World Cup once (2024).
Legacies of T20 World Cup Winners:
Winning any T20 World Cup is an incredible accomplishment. Winning two T20 World Cups will put you amongst a very select group of players who have done so. Only 9 cricketers fit this category:
- 8 West Indians (2012 & 2016)
- 1 Indian (2007 & 2024)
Of these, Daren Sammy holds a unique legacy as the only captain to have lifted the T20 World Cup trophy twice.
