The shooting death of an Indian tech worker in Canada has broken up his family. His parents, who are very sad, say they had been telling their son over and over again to go back to India in the years before he died.
The victim, 37-year-old Chandan Kumar, was shot in a Toronto parking lot by someone who is still unknown. He was taken to the hospital right away, but his injuries killed him later. His village, near Bengaluru, is still shocked by what happened. His family is now waiting for official news and help to bring him back for his funeral.
He was important to us
Chandan’s parents said they had been waiting for a long time for him to come back home from their home in Thyamagondlu in the Nelamangala area. They were proud of what he had done abroad, but they were worried about the distance and the unknowns of living in a different country.
His dad said that the family had no idea they would hear such terrible news. He also said that they were numb from the quick loss and couldn’t figure out how a normal day could end in tragedy.
The parents have asked the Indian government to help them bring their son’s body back to India so that traditional funeral rites can be followed.
Take part in community circles
In addition to his work in IT, Chandan was known to be active in culture and community projects for Indians living in Canada. Family members say that he was interested in making better links between people who spoke Kannada.
Some people may have had problems because of these efforts, according to his mother. However, police have not officially confirmed any reason for the attack.
Back home, his neighbours and friends remember him as driven, friendly, and deeply linked to his roots, even though he lived abroad. A lot of people couldn’t believe that someone who was described as nice and hardworking could die in such a cruel way.
The investigation in Toronto continues
Toronto cops have said that the killing was a planned attack. Police were called when it was said that a man had been struck close up. He was taken to the hospital by emergency services, but he could not be saved.
The police are now looking at proof, which could include camera tape, and talking to witnesses. No arrests have been made yet, and the government hasn’t said anything about who might be guilty.
The family is even more worried because they don’t have enough information. They say they need answers right away.
A family asks the government for help
Chandan’s parents have had to deal with the effects from a very long way away, which has been very hard. His friends and family say they need political and practical help to take the official steps needed to bring his body to India.
Family, friends and leaders in the area have started to reach out to show their support, giving apologies and help where it’s needed. People from the larger Kannada community have also sent messages of support. Many of them see Chandan’s trip as a reflection of the hopes of young Indians who work abroad.
But for the family who lost a son, the goal is terribly simple: they want their son to come home.
As the investigation in Canada goes on, family and friends of the victim hope that the police will find out the truth about what happened. Until then, a family in Karnataka waits in grief, holding on to memories and trying to find peace after a terrible loss.
