O’Romeo (2026) is an Indian Hindi-language romantic action-thriller film directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The main cast includes Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri with Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwary, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani, and Farida Jalal providing supporting roles.
The plot of O’Romeo is loosely based on a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, and combines elements of romance, revenge, and underworld crime. Kapoor plays a tattooed hitman attempting to navigate the violent underworld of Mumbai while Dimri’s character attempts to get revenge against the people responsible for killing her mother; love, betrayal, and consequences will find their way into the lives of both lead characters.
The length of O’Romeo is roughly 178 minutes (almost three hours) and it often provides an intense viewing experience, as well as very powerful emotional music created by Bhardwaj with lyrics written by Gulzar.
Mixed Critical And Audience Reception
O’Romeo was released in theatres and received an overall mixed to moderate reception from audiences and critics alike — the film received praise for camera work, acting, and action sequences but was met with criticism regarding the storyline’s coherence, flaws in the screenplay, and some viewers felt that the film was tonally inconsistent and much too long for a film with this subject matter.
A few reviewers have referred to O’Romeo as highly technical and worth seeing while others have noted the film despite being a somewhat enjoyable movie may have appeared as though it was not a finished work when viewed by audiences and/or critics.
Audience Response
Social media and discussion forums have provided both positive and negative reviews of O’Romeo from different audiences. There were all positive responses such as: amazing visuals and great acting. There were also negative comments such as: not living up to the hype/overhyped, had a weaker story and was just not as good as previous films by Bhardwaj.
Some ticketed platforms had no audience rating or ratings that were disabled. Again, there appears to be a large divide through discussions on social media between extreme enthusiasm and extreme criticism of a film, reflective of a divided audience response.
Before the movie premiered, controversy surrounded O’Romeo when legal paperwork was filed against producer Sanober Shaikh (daughter of a real-life person portrayed in the film) claiming an unauthorized portrayal of the father, thus generating interest in the movie before it was released.
O’Romeo has just started its theatrical release/roll-out (valentine’s weekend of February 13, 2026, evening). As of 14 February at approximately 1 a.m., box office numbers are as follows.
Domestic/India
- Day One: Approx ₹8.25 – ₹8.50 cr (net) India
- Day Two: Approx ₹12.25 cr (net) India
- Day Three (weekend) approx 30 + domestic total = approx ₹30 cr cumulative total by day three
- Day Four – Day Five total cumulative total = approx ₹34.9 cr (net) India today (from past experience/generally shown trend is that after valentine’s weekend, weekend number significantly decline)
Worldwide – Early Estimate
Early estimate indicates between domestic (India) and worldwide (overseas) combined gross as of day five will total approximately 51 crore globally; approximately 51 crores in combined gross from day one to day five globally.
Budget vs Earnings
The estimated budget of the movie sits between ₹125 – 150 crore.
However, at this point, O’Romeo has not achieved enough revenue from box office to account for all theatre expenditures. In other words, it is an unsuccessful film at theatres because it is estimated that O’Romeo’s total net theatrical gross thus far is between ₹30 – 50 crore.
Note: Final figures for O’Romeo will determine profitability once all earnings have been calculated, including the final total theatre box office, overseas, digital or streaming rights and other ways to generate revenue; however, for now, from what is known in theatre sales, it appears that O’Romeo has not yet broken even with its entire production budget.
Summary
- Type and Plot: A romantic crime/devil movie based on a true story that takes place in the underbelly of a city.
- Critics and Audience Reviews: Various opinions; critics gave the film mixed reviews and so did the audience when they reviewed the film on the internet.
- Box Office: Although it had a good opening weekend at theatres, its total gross or net during the first 2 days has fallen far below the projected total gross of ₹51 crore for an entire worldwide theatrical run.
- Production Costs vs Earnings: With current estimates, O’Romeo has not broken even based upon only box office revenue to date.
