New Delhi, March 24, 2026 — There comes a certain time in the life of every young cricketer in India when the world comes to a standstill the moment when the telephone rings with the news of the BCCI. In the case of 22-year-old Anushka Sharma that day has come today. When the Women’s Selection Committee released the list of 15 people in the upcoming tour to South Africa of T20Is, there was at least one veteran name in the list of probables, Anushka Brijmohan Sharma.
The all-rounder of Madhya Pradesh has finally received the maiden international call-up which is an award to the season which could only be termed as a meteoritic climb up the hierarchy in domestic and franchise cricket.
The WPL Spark that ignited a Career
Anushka has been a steady player playing in the Madhya Pradesh and Central Zone, but it is the glitzy lights of the Women Premiere League (WPL) 2026 that served as the stage. The pressure was huge because the Gujarat Giants signed Sahara for an astounding ₹45 lakh, i.e., the most expensive uncapped player during the auction.
She did not merely go through the pressure, she flourished on it. Anushka scored 177 in seven innings with a strike rate of 129.19 whereby she frequently stepped into high pressure middle order collapses and rescued the ship. Her best game was against UP Warriorz when she clinically hit 44 runs and had a 100 run partnership with Ashleigh Gardner. It was the calmness as well as the running that impressed the selectors.
Some domestic scout said that she batted like somebody who had been in a hundred different games. She knows when to turn strike and how and when to draw the trigger.

It is not an ordinary bilateral tour because it is a five-match series in South Africa that will start April 17 in Durban. It is the last of the testing grounds before the ICC Women T20 World Cup 2026, which is going to be held in June in England.
The makers of the selection have chosen quite obviously a combination of tried and tested and fresh and fearless. Although the core of the team remains the same with Harmanpreet Kaur (Captain) and Smriti Mandhana (Vice-Captain), the emergence of Anushka Sharma and the retention of fast bowler Kashvee Gautam is an indication that the team is also going to focus on having more explosive and multi-dimensional.
The conditions of Durban and Johannesburg are friendly to pace will be a steep learning curve to the young all-rounder. But being already the India A representative in the Rising Stars Asia Cup in Bangkok earlier on this year, Anushka is not a virgin to the burden of India crest.

Tactical Variances and Strategic Omissions
There were some hard decisions to make in the squad announcement. The selectors have dropped some familiar names to create space to accommodate fresh energy. The notable absentees were Amanjot Kaur and Sneh Rana and youngster Vaishnavi Sharma.
The emphasis can be seen to be on solidifying the seam department to the bouncy South African tracks. The inclusion of Kashvee Gautam and Kranti Gaud with the assault led by Renuka Singh Thakur gives India the diversity it will require to take down the Proteas on their own soil.
