On March 10, 2026, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Guwahati Science City at Tepesia, located on the outskirts of Guwahati. The facility is one more step toward enhancing Assam’s scientific education and innovation.
A collaboration between the Government of Assam and the National Council of Science Museum under the Ministry of Culture, Guwahati Science City seeks to excite students and the general public about scientific exploration.
The facility spans approximately 82 acres and has an estimated total cost of ~3 million. It was built as a modern edutainment facility for providing experiences that combine education with entertainment.
Major Boost Gradually Adding to Science Education
While speaking during the inauguration, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma discussed how important it was to develop a scientific mindset among young people. Although the state has increased its use of educational infrastructure by creating new schools, there has been at least a 30% decrease in the number of students who have enrolled in core science disciplines.
The new Guwahati Science City will help provide students the opportunity to explore scientific principles through designed exhibits and interactive galleries. According to the Assam government, Guwahati Science City will be the centre for all those interested in science, regardless of whether they’re passive users or active contributors.
Sarma also noted that this program will support the development of innovation and promote the next generation of scientists, engineers and researchers in Assam.

Facilities/Attractions of Guwahati Science City
The Guwahati Science City has many modern exhibits and theme zones to help make science learning fun. “Eureka” and “Space Odyssey” are two of the main attractions where there are interactive science exhibits and simulations.
As per officials, these areas have been designed so that visitors can experience complex scientific concepts through visual demonstrations, experiments and digital experiences. Additionally, the Guwahati Science City is much larger than the Science City in Kolkata, therefore it will be one of the largest science museums in the region.
In the future, a Science Innovation Centre and Science Park will be created on site to help increase the learning opportunities available to students and visitors.
