The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is fast approaching with an unprecedented number of candidates expected to take part this year; 24 lakh candidates registered to write NEET and with ever-increasing numbers, NEET is now the largest medical entrance test in India. Do not let the size of this compare to your journey and remain focused on your preparation.

Students should now have downloaded their admit cards from the NTA website, and will have verified all the information about their examination centre, time and details, and have printed their admit card to have ready at least a week prior to the examination to avoid any additional stress.

At this time, above anything else, take a deep breath and trust your abilities to do well in the examination. You have already prepared for this moment for several months or perhaps years, therefore do not attempt to cram new material or stress yourself out further. Continue to review and repeat the material that you have learned, remain calm and collected, and maintain a proper daily schedule. To enhance your chances of success in the upcoming exam, here are five critical pointers for candidates.

                            1. Primarily study from NCERT

Many previous year candidates and faculty agree that students should use NCERT textbooks, particularly in Biology, as their primary source of information. This is because many of the questions asked on the NEET exam stem directly from the NCERT syllabus and/or questions are asked that are transcriptions of information found in the NCERT.

If a student has sufficient comprehension of each and every sentence, drawing, and concept contained within the NCERT component of the course will suffice, and then it should be a very simple transition to refer to problems from an advanced perspective using an advanced resource (i.e. syllabus, guide-book, different subject) to solve Physics and Chemistry problems.

                            2. Regularly Do Mock Tests

Mock testing is much more than just a measure of how well prepared someone is; mock testing also assists all candidates by assisting them with some of the mechanics involved with taking an actual exam (i.e. increasing test-taking efficiency, understanding test-taking strategies, understanding the psychology of test taking, etc.). By doing full-length mock tests under timed conditions, all candidates experience the same environment and conditions as on actual test day, but many times before the actual test day.

The benefit of doing many mock tests prior to the actual exam allows students to:

                            • Identify areas that need improvement
                            • Increase the speed of answering questions
                            • Increase the accuracy of answering questions
                            • Develop strategies for when to answer first or leave unanswered

Once each mock test has been completed, students can analyze their performance, but must first analyze all of their mistakes before looking at test scores. Understanding how and/or why an answer was given incorrectly will assist you in avoiding that same mistake on the actual exam.

                            3. Strengthen Time Management Skills

Proper time management is vital to performing well on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). With three hours to answer 180 questions spread out among physics, chemistry and biology, students must learn how to use their time wisely over each of these subjects.

A common strategy involves students completing each subject in the following order:

                            • Biology (typically the shortest)
                            • Chemistry (a swift move)
                            • Physics (usually longer due to the amount of calculations required)

However, students should create their own individual time management plan based off their respective strengths. A good way to become familiar with managing time is to practice with a timer during study sessions.

                            4. Use Smart Review Strategies As Opposed To Blindly Repeating Material

Reviewing your material is essential to performing well, however, it is important to use a strategy when reviewing your materials. Instead of just reading your notes as if they are the last time you will ever read them again, utilize active recall techniques.

                            Examples of these techniques include:

                            • Answering questions from prior years’ tests
                            • Using flash cards to review formulas and/or reactions.
                            • Creating quick reference pages to allow for expedite review before the test.

The weeks leading up to the actual test should be focused on reviewing and not learning new material. Trying to learn new material just before the actual test can hinder your performance due to the stress and confusion it causes!

                            5. Take Care of Your Mental/Physical Health

Students commonly disregard their physical and mental health when stressed out during preparation. Not taking care of your mental and physical health will negatively impact your performance. To maintain focus and energy, it is critical to sleep enough, eat healthy, and take periodic breaks.

Stress Management Guidelines: It is important to manage your stress levels while preparing for NEET. Stress relief techniques, such as meditation, light exercise, or going for a short walk can help reduce anxiety. Remaining positive about your abilities and refraining from comparing yourself to other candidates can help improve your self-confidence and belief in your own abilities.

                            Conclusion

Success on the NEET exam doesn’t stem from just effort but rather effective preparation. A consistent study routine, combined with effective strategies, such as utilizing NCERT as a primary resource, taking mock tests, using time wisely, revising properly, and remaining healthy throughout the study cycle, will provide you with a greater chance of being successful.

As the NEET exam approaches, the most helpful things you can do for yourself will be to have consistency and maintain confidence in your total preparation. Remember to stay focused on your studies, believe in your overall preparation, and give your best effort on the exam.

Best of luck! You have something to prove to yourself, and that is to walk into your exam with confidence, demonstrate how hard you have been working, and let your preparation speak for itself!
