A shocking event has affected the Indian community in Europe. Two Indians were killed by gunfire in northern Italy while leaving a gurdwara after attending a religious event. On the day of the incident, the island of Covo (located in Bergamo Province) was shocked after hearing the news of this tragic loss.
This will come as a disappointment/hurt to both families. Raginder Singh, 48, was an established member of the local area and well-known amongst the diaspora community. Gurmit Singh (also 48) is from nearby town of Agnadello and also had a high profile among his community members.
To many in Europe, the deaths of Raginder and Gurmit are shocking especially given that they were killed in a location where they had just engaged in both a religious and social function (in Covo). This has created fear within the Indian diaspora, which will likely not dissipate quickly.
Witness Information and Significant Leads
One of the citizens cited witnesses are supporting the authorities in providing information regarding individuals involved in this incident. Information provided by a witness suggests that the shooter may have had some connection to the deceased; the witness states that he had observed the shooter frequented the same gurudwara on numerous occasions and the similarities in appearance and demeanor would lead investigators to believe that more than one person knew both parties involved in this incident. If this witness is correct, investigators will utilize this information as a potential lead for establishing any historical relationship(s) between, or a possible existing dispute(s) between members or groups within the Indian Community.

Possibility of a Planned Attack
Investigators think the shooting was planned, not the result of an argument that escalated quickly. They have eliminated as possible all instances in which a fight began and led to gunplay instead.
Furthermore, investigators believe the placement of shots in the multiple shots fired further supports the belief that the victims were targeted intentionally.
A third person has lingering injuries due to being hit with either a bullet or a grazing bullet due to being near the scene of the crime, which could lead investigators to find the shooter’s motive due to the close family ties between the individual who committed the crime, and the other people involved in the commission of this robbery that led to the use of firearms.
Ongoing investigation
The police continue to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting and are working to locate the suspects involved. Investigators will utilize evidence, eyewitness testimony, and security video footage to determine the current state of the investigation and to identify any suspects in the shooting.
The police have not ruled out any motives at this time. A possible motive is that there was a personal vendetta between the suspects and the victims, however police have not ruled out organized crime as a possible motive or any other forms of disputes that are unrelated to the above-mentioned motives. The investigation is still ongoing and additional information will follow soon.

Community Reactions and Concerns
Residents of Bergamo, Italy, are deeply concerned about the shooting deaths of two men and how this crime may negatively impact the Indian community. They have no prior association to anyone involved in the shooting; therefore, they are unsure if it will affect them or those who reside or work within the Italian community.
The Indian migrant worker population represents the majority of Bergamo’s workforce employed in agriculture or related industries and is worried about reported incidents of violence against immigrants within this region. They have focused substantially on violence against them as a consequence of the recent shooting incident. Prior to this incident, Bergamo was actively preparing for the Vaisakhi Festival by local community organizations.
Conclusion
The investigation of the murders of two Indian citizens during their prayer service will have significant implications on the future safety of the Bergamo neighborhood and its relations with law enforcement. As the investigation progresses, the Indian community in Italy and the Indian community worldwide search for answers and retribution for the murders of their two fellow Indians.
