Mira Kapoor, wife of actor Shahid Kapoor, found herself being ridiculed online after posting about her luxurious living position. She is known for her good taste in fashion and posting styled images; however, she shared multiple photos with high-end accessories, designer clothing, and what looks like an extravagant home or venue.
While some users commented on how much they enjoy what she has chosen to share, she also received a large number of negative comments regarding the fact that her posting was “tone-deaf,” “extremely showy,” etc.
As the controversy escalated within hours of her posting, many of the users on that page were stating both good and bad opinions regarding the images. Much of the negative commentary was due to a perception that if individuals are currently having financial problems due to the economy, then it would be inappropriate for others that are not, to expose their love for the product and/or brand.
What the Post Featured? – Social media sparks backlash
Many of those who commented on the images said that every one of those images were identified as items that someone who was wealthy would own, including: designer purse, designer jewelry, and/or home décor. All of the photographs in the now-viral post echoed very polished photos; emphasizing a style often seen by an influencer. Unfortunately, the comment of “thank you for following me,” on the post did not help to relieve any of the criticism that Mira Kapoor was unable to excite her many followers with the items in her images.
The massive backlash created by critics on social media and traditional media regarding the posting of the images, appeared to be due to the question of how much is too much? While many influencers have used their fame to help promote aspirational lifestyles, there is a fine line between being able to be inspired by others or simply being excess. Due to this fact, many individuals who commented on the images felt that posting excessive amounts of money could result in unrealistic expectations from the followers who follow the influencers.

As is typical with most celebrity scandals, opinions on the controversy were very varied throughout the comment sections on their respective social media channels. On one side, many people defended Mira Kapoor and pointed out that she had every right to post about her life and accomplishments. The people who defended her also pointed out that Mira Kapoor has a consistent social media presence that relates to fashion, wellness and luxury, thus making her post consistent with her brand.
However, other people were calling her tone deaf and said that celebrities and influencers should take more consideration to their audience when they show their wealth on social media.
The controversy highlights a continuing debate in the digital age; should public figures take into account the socioeconomic threshold of their audience when they express themselves as individuals?

So far, Mira Kapoor has yet to make a public statement regarding the trolling she received after this event took place, and it is still unclear if she will respond or simply move on like most celebrities do in similar situations. In some cases ignoring negative comments online won’t lead to more, while in other cases a clarification may change the direction of the narrative.
Mira’s silence regarding the situation has not diminished the conversation surrounding it. The original post continues to get circulated on many different social media sites, with users continuing to talk about both the post’s imagery and what implications this may have further out into the future.
