On March 22nd, 2026, a horrible aviation event occured when an air canada express regional jet collided with a fire truck during landing at La-Guardia airport in New York city. The airplane was operated by jazz aviation, coming from Montreal, and had 72 passengers and four crew members onboard. The collision happened just after takeoff and resulted in most of the front of the jet being destroyed.
Death / Injury
The captain and first officer were both killed in the incident and are the biggest tragedy from the event. A minimum of 40 people (including passengers, crew members and first responders) suffered from injuries requiring emergency treatment and some were transported to the hospital due to injuries. However many of those individuals did not sustain injuries that were life threatening and most of the injured individuals did not require additional medical care after receiving initial treatment. Fire Engine also had wounded firefighters but ultimately their injuries will likely not result in serious injuries.
Causes of the Accident
As per initial statements, it appears that the Incident Fire Fighting Truck was responding to an emergency situation involving another airplane at the time it entered the runway.
Air traffic control had, at that moment, given the fire engine approval to cross onto that runway. However, there was an attempt by air traffic controllers to prevent the fire engine from colliding with an Air Canada aircraft just prior to the two coming into contact.
Investigators are currently looking into whether or not there was either a breakdown in communication and/or a failure to follow established procedures that may have contributed to this incident.

Airport Shut Down & Travel Chaos
LaGuardia Airport was closed for a number of hours after the accident, and normal flight operations did not resume until later that evening. This had a major effect on airports throughout the United States due to flights being cancelled and delayed.
Due to cancellations and delays to flights, many thousands of passengers throughout the entire U.S. aviation system were impacted.
Investigation On Going
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have launched a comprehensive investigation of this accident, and they are assisted by Canadian authorities.
Air traffic control communications, runway safety procedures, and personnel issues will be primary areas of interest in this investigation, all of which have come under scrutiny recently.

Broader Concerns About Safety
The current aviation industry is suffering greatly from increased numbers of air safety and operational issues related to the understaffed and non-coordinated US aviation workforce between air traffic controllers and ground crews. There is an increased number of incidents of runway management system failures, which prevent aircraft from winning what would normally be the path to a runway.
This unfortunate incident adds to many questions being raised about the safety of airport management systems and how long these issues have been occurring before this tragic incident; however, the investigation continues on what initiated the incident, which began as a normal landing before ending in the tragic accident.
