Two Indian Air Force (IAF) FIGHTER PILOTs lost their lives due to a tragic accident in Assam when the IAF Su-30MKI jet crashed into the hilly terrain during routine training exercises.
The IAF has confirmed that both Fighter Pilots Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar were carrying out a routine training mission before flying into severe weather shortly after taking off from Jorhat Air Force Base. The IAF also stated that they lost contact with the aircraft at approximately 7:42pm after take off on Thursday night, and within a very short period of time, search and recovery teams were deployed for a possible downed aircraft.
The IAF has expressed its greater respect to both pilots for being courageous, dedicated and committed through their heroic efforts in serving the Indian nation.
The IAF issued an official statement expressing condolences and re-affirming to both pilots’ families that they would extend all available resources to assist the families at this time.
Crash During Training Mission
The jet fighter was involved in a routine flight when the mishap occurred. The aircraft is believed to have crashed in the Chokihola area of Karbi Anglong district, approximately 60 kilometers from Jorhat. Witnesses from the surrounding community said they heard a loud explosion and then saw smoke billowing from the mountain where the aircraft went down.
Rescue personnel from the Indian Air Force and local government were dispatched to the scene of the crash. Due to the rough terrain and dense woods near the crash site, rescuers had difficulty getting to the site of the crash. Sadly, both pilots died as a result of the crash.

Indian Air Force Conducting Investigation
The Indian Air Force has begun a Court of Inquiry to investigate what caused the accident. Investigators will look into the mechanical issues that may have been present on the aircraft, data from the flight, and operational conditions that may have contributed to the crash.
The Su-30MKI is considered one of the best and more advanced fighter jets available in the Indian Air Force today. Made by Sukhoi Design Bureau in Russia and manufactured with a license by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. in India, is a main component of India’s combat air power.
Leaders and Nation Pay Tribute
Many political leaders and government officials commented on their sadness from this tragic event. Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences to the men who lost their lives, as well as paid his respects to their service to the country.
Tributes are now coming in for both of these men nationwide as citizens recognize the sacrifice that soldiers make for the protection of our nation. This tragic incident proves again the courage and determination that every fighter pilot in India has displayed while risking their lives for the nation, whether in a combat environment or in training.
