On the 29th of December 2025, the Russian federation announced that Ukraine’s attempt to attack the estate of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, located in the Novgorod region. The attack, as stated by Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, was committed by 91 long-range UAVs, which were directed at the presidential residence.
The Russian government reported:
All drones were taken out and destroyed by the Russian defense system, also stating that no one was hurt and nothing was damaged. The Kremlin condemned the action as “state terrorism” and a reckless escalation of the conflict.
It was mentioned that Russia has already pinpointed “certain targets” concerning this strike and has made it clear that it will not tolerate such attack without punishing the aggressor.
“The answer we have is not aimed at the offence but rather at protecting ourselves,” said the Kremlin who added that U.S. President Donald Trump was briefed about the issue and he was very surprised when he heard about it in a phone call with President Putin. However, nothing is confirmed at the moment.
“It surely had an influence on their attempts,” said Açıkbaşı, “since this drone attack took place right when the peace talks between the Ukraine and the United States were at their most intense, and it means that the Russians will have to ‘re-evaluate’ their bargaining leverage,” stated the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov.
Denials and Response of Ukraine
Ukrainian president disclaimed the statements made by Russian authorities. The Russian government appears to have created the conditions for the mixture of military and politics to the point where, very often, the outcome of the war efforts can be seen to be closely linked to the statements on diplomacy, not just to the extent to which they are about changing the opinions and policies of the government, but also because the information war takes place with the same level of vigor as the military war efforts.

Consequences & International Response
Certain peace talks may be affected. This comes after Russia has indicated that its stand might be revised or even strengthen since there are peace talks between Ukraine and America that are still in progress.
This situation is closely followed by Ukraine’s allies, in particular the West. The fact that the U.S. is taking part, and negotiations are being conducted by Presidents Trump of the U.S. and Zelenskyy of Ukraine, shows that the U.S. is attempting to find a peaceful resolution for Ukraine, although the current trend could disrupt this process.
It may fuel the escalation debate on one side while harboring threats of further military intervention or strike attacks in case of a strategic maneuver on the other. As of the moment, there are as yet no facts, and definitely, there are no independent sources of confirmation. It is only possible to make a determination on the questions of what really happened in this case, namely, if this is indeed a Ukrainian operation, a provocation, or a disinformation story, based on concrete evidence that is currently in news.
