How the Draw Works: Pots, Rules, and New Bracket Format
The 48 teams (or substitutes representing teams that are yet to enter the tournament) will be divided into four pots of 12 teams, according to the FIFA World Rankings of 19 November.
Pot Structure
- Pot 1: Hosts (USA, Mexico, Canada) + top 9 ranked teams
- Pot 2: Next 12 teams
- Pot 3: Next 12
- Pot 4: Lowest-ranked qualifiers + playoff placeholders
Each of the 12 groups (A–L) will consist of one team from each pot.
Standard Draw Rules
- Teams from the same pot cannot be drawn together.
- Teams from the same confederation cannot be placed in the same group.
(exception: UEFA, which has many representatives).
How the Ceremony Unfolds
- Pot 1 is drawn first.
- Hosts USA, Mexico, and Canada already have assigned groups and match dates.
- The remaining Pot 1 teams are drawn into Groups A–L.
- FIFA then proceeds pot-by-pot (2, 3, and 4), filling each group alphabetically.

A New Twist: The Tennis-Style Seeded Bracket
FIFA has also employed a tennis-type knockout bracket like never before, in which the four most ranked teams, Spain, Argentina, France, and England, will be assigned four different routes.
This ensures the following:
- They are not allowed to meet till the second round (provided they all win their groups).
- The preliminary knockout rounds will become more evenly matched.
- The possible power struggles, such as England, France, or Argentina against Spain, would most probably be a last four.
This bracket structure is one of the most tactical forms of draws in the history of the World Cup, and it was an incredible way of drawing a story of a tournament prior to its commencement.
Who Has Qualified So Far?
Forty-two teams have secured their places. The remaining six berths will be filled in March through:
- UEFA playoffs
- Inter-confederation playoff tournament
The full pot allocations will be finalized once all 48 nations are known
Latest Updates Before the Draw
There were several significant announcements before the ceremony:
- Phase 3 (sale of World Cup tickets) starts on Dec. 11-The following step will enable fans to purchase single-match tickets depending on the matchups that will be confirmed during the draw.
- FIFA affirms the new format of the draw-Premier teams are guaranteed not to be disqualified at an earlier stage.
- Analysts balance cases in England-England analysts point to the fact that even a semifinal or a final against France or Argentina would be the first time England would be eliminated in the semifinals or the final.
A Global Moment of Anticipation
Having had the most participating countries ever, new approaches to the tournament setup, and the time-honored three-host model, the 2026 World Cup draw is the real starting point in the countdown to the largest event in the history of football.
