In Kishtwar district, located in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, security forces have ramped up their anti-terror operations based on intelligence leads about the presence of armed militants in the area. Operations are focused on the thickly forested areas and mountainous regions of the Chenab Valley, which historically have made it difficult for security forces to conduct successful operations because of the high level of access difficulty combined with the dense vegetation.
Coordinated Efforts by Multiple Agencies
According to senior officials, area domination exercises, search and cordon operations, and enhanced levels of both physical and aerial surveillance are being undertaken to prevent the regrouping of militants, or to keep them from moving across the districts.
Focus on Remote and Forested Locations
The rugged topography of Kishtwar, including the thickly forested areas, has made it challenging for security planners to develop solutions to the problem of militants, and as a result forces are conducting systematic searches of remote villages and higher elevations using a combination of ground patrols and technical surveillance to identify suspicious activity. Authorities said that this operation has the dual objective of neutralizing any threat posed by the militants while also eliminating their opportunities for logistical support.

Increased Vigil Along Key Routes
Security along key roads linking Kishtwar to surrounding districts has been improved with the addition of checkpoints and mobile patrols to monitor and stop unlawful individual(s) hiding or escaping. Night surveillance has also been increased as part of today’s operation.
The district administration has issued warnings asking residents to be aware of their surroundings and to work with law enforcement. Officials indicated that while security operations will continue at an accelerated rate, every caution will be taken to minimize disruption for civilians.
Kishtwar and surrounding areas have seen sporadic acts of violence in recent years from militants, which have led to several emergency response efforts. Security agencies said that this increase in activity is due to advanced intelligence reports and is part of a wider plan to keep the Jammu area safe.
The security agencies have committed to continuing law enforcement operations until the area is safe from danger. They seek to balance protecting civilians and putting pressure on terrorist groups operating in the region.
