A video, which depicts Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ripping off the hijab of a Muslim woman at a government appointment ceremony, has caused political and social furore in most Indian states, prompting accusations of religious insensitivity, gender abuse, and power abuse.

This happened in the state of Patna during a governmental event where the woman was being handed an appointment letter, and she is a newly appointed doctor of alternative medicine. The Chief Minister is shown in the video asking her to take off the veil and then reaching out to unveil the hijab before the other officials on the stage watched the hijab being lifted from her face and laughing.
The video has since become viral, resulting in vehement criticisms by the opposition parties, minority rights activists, and parts of the civil society.
Political, Religious Groups Demand Resignation
The opposition parties, in their turn, severely criticised Nitish Kumar and called this action unacceptable and thus demanded that he resign. The leaders of the Congress accused the Chief Minister of humiliating the woman in the open air, and the RJD spread the video on social media, which claimed the increasing ideological deviation in the politics of Kumar.
The AIMIM held demonstrations in Mumbai that were seeking criminal prosecution claiming that the act was against fundamental right to dignity and religious freedom. A number of Muslim organisations referred to the case as a direct assault on the independence of women and a manifestation of the increasing Islamophobia.

Women’s Rights Voices Join In
Women activists and personalities vented their anger about the event. Ex-actor Zaira Wasim added that the Chief Minister should apologise since the act was an insult to dignity and limits. People who opposed it also noted that no one in office could claim to meddle with a woman about her clothes and that the act was a worrying display of power abuse.
Other international responses also emerged, with the foreign minister of Pakistan declaring the incident a shame and saying that more protection should be provided to the minorities.
Government Silent, JD-U Defends Chief Minister
Nitish Kumar has not come out publicly to save his side. But his party, the JD-U, came to his defence on social media, claiming that the minorities in Bihar had always been safe under his watch. The message did not touch on the video or the woman.
Political observers indicate that the scandal comes at an opportune time to the newly formed Bihar government, where the BJP has recorded the first-ever majority government. The critics are interpreting the gesture of Kumar as the act of increasing tensions over hijab and religious identity in the country.
Broader Context: Hijab Debates in India
The furore contributes to the current debate in the country on the rights of hijab. Arguments over the headscarf have grown in recent years – the most controversial being in Karnataka, where a ban in classrooms resulted in mass protests and courtroom battles.
Bihar has almost 18 per cent of its population consisting of Muslims, and such a controversy will most likely influence the society and contribute to the further strengthening of political polarities within the state.
In the meantime, the pressure on Nitish Kumar is still mounting with rights groups, opposition parties, and religious organisations clamouring to account and act. The woman in question has not taken a position so far.
