Large arrests have been made by the police in Ghaziabad after a video went viral in which people of a militia front organization of the Right Wing Community’ were handing out swords and sharp-edged weapons in Shalimar Garden in the Ghaziabad town of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
As per several sources:
The police arrested 10 members of the outfit Hindu Raksha Dal (HRD) who distributed swords among people and instilled fear in them.
The group was spotted through viral videos on various social sites displaying swords as well as chanting slogans.
Several swords have been recovered from the arrested individuals, and an investigation was launched that includes the lodging of an FIR at Shalimar Garden Police Station. The video attracted much attention insofar as it revealed the distribution of the guns that were allegedly encouraged by the leaders, offering the explanation for the fear that the community felt that could disrupt the peace in the densely populated area.
FIR, Charges, and Police Reaction
In the First Information Report (FIR) registered by the police in Ghaziabad, 16 people have been named, including HRD chief Pinky Chaudhary (also known as Bhupendra Chaudhary), who is absconding at present. There are 25-30 unidentified party activists too.
The charges under “Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita”p
- Rioting
- Rioting while armed with deadly weapons
- Wrongful confinement
- And connected provisions in the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act.
Nimish Patil, the deputy commissioner of police, explained that the issue came under the notice of the authorities only after the videos were circulated all across the social media.
“It is a sensitive area, and we had to act in order to prevent any kind of injuries and to maintain law and order,” the police added.
Patil pointed out that other parts might be included depending on evidence and investigations that are still being carried out. Additional policing and raids were being done to arrest other suspects who are still at large.
Group’s Rationale and Statements
The act is performed by the ‘Hindu Raksha Dal,’ which is considered an extremist Hindu nationalist group. According to the reports, the distribution of the swords aims to ensure the Hindus’ self-defense in the country of India. In the viral videos released on the social media platforms, Chaudhary and other leaders of the HRD explained the reason behind the sword distribution.
In one video clip, Chaudhary is heard saying: “Hindus must remain well-equipped with weapons in order to defend themselves, and the HRD has accordingly acted.” This kind of stand in support of self-defense has been criticized widely by the government and civil society alike since it is akin to promoting violence.
Local Reaction and Wider Concerns
The residents in and around Shalimar Garden are displaying fear and apprehension at the display of swords, which are obviously capable of causing deadly harm. It has been reported that both common citizens and members of the police force could easily witness an escalation owing to this kind of display.
The incident has also drawn broader debate on social media and with commentators over law enforcement responses to armed activism and the threat it poses to community harmony. Viral posts and online discussions show divergent views, with some criticizing the group’s rhetoric while others have raised questions about the speed and scope of the official action.
Moreover, videos going viral online with statements by personalities such as Yati Narsinghanand praising extreme measures have gone as far as to compare such actions to groups like ISIS, thus stirring this into a political controversy and raising alarm over extreme messaging in the public sphere.
Context and Background
The Hindu Raksha Dal is a relatively small but highly controversial outfit in the region for its past polarizing actions and rhetoric. This Ghaziabad incident underlines the challenges that come in the way of law enforcement in balancing free speech, public safety, and the prevention of communal tension during periods of heightened sensitivity.
They are digging deep and now want to arrest all the accused as listed in the FIR, in order to contain further escalation of violence in the area.
