In a key development in Indian civil aviation, Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar has officially begun commercial flight operations today, in a show of Inaugural scheduled passenger flights. The first aircraft to land at the airport operated by IndiGo, departed from Lucknow, marking the beginning of regular scheduled air travel from this long-awaited greenfield airport.
The opening of the airport is a significant achievement for both Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR) and helps to create an alternative air transport gateway to Delhi Airport, which is already extremely congested, while also enhancing flight-access connectivity across Northern India.
Official Launch of Operations is Marked by First Scheduled Passenger Flight from Lucknow
IndiGo Flight 6E-2278, which departed from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow on Sunday night, landed at NIA about 8 a.m. on Monday morning. The airplane was met with a traditional water-cannon welcome at the airport.
Following the arrival of the first passenger flight at NIA, the next flight to leave the airport (also an IndiGo Flight) departed back to Lucknow, thereby commencing two-way passenger services at the newly operating airport.

Farmers Become the First Passengers
150 farmers participated at the inauguration of the new airport and were included as part of the passenger list to fly into/out of the airport. As such, participation by these local farmer communities provided an emotional tribute to those whose land facilitated the construction of this major project.
Many of those local farmers and their families were among the first to become residents of the land and, in fact, farmed the same land as part of the agricultural communities before transforming it into a developing transportation hub.

A Historic Take-Off for NCR’s New Aviation Hub
Development cost for Noida International Airport is estimated to be approximately ₹11,200 crore, making it one of India’s largest greenfield airport developments in the country. The first phase of construction includes a single runway and a modern terminal designed for handling approximately twelve million passengers each year. The airport authorities have ambitious expansion plans for the facility, which, once fully developed, will have the capacity for more than seventy million passengers annually and be one of the busiest aviation hubs in the country.
Experts believe that the airport will create significant opportunities for economic growth within western Uttar Pradesh. It will facilitate improved connectivity throughout the region, resulting in increased investment in industries such as logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, hospitality, and real estate.
The airport is also strategically located along the Yamuna Expressway, which will strengthen existing industrial growth corridors and create thousands of employment opportunities within the region. The state government has consistently identified this airport as a key component to achieving Uttar Pradesh’s economic ambitions.

Enhanced Regional Population Connectivity
IndiGo Airlines was the first airline to begin service from Noida International Airport, and they plan to connect with 16 different destinations throughout their network from this airport location. The first scheduled destination from Noida International Airport will be Lucknow.
According to various local and regional officials, the airport is expected to increase connectivity for citizens living in western Uttar Pradesh, including Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Agra, and the surrounding area. The airport will also provide additional capacity to allow more passengers to utilize the operation of the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport located in Delhi while at the same time providing significant growth opportunities for both the business and tourism sectors.
A Mega Infrastructure Project: Continued Road Blocks to Surface Transportation
Airport operations are underway however they have no planned transport links at present. Additional transport links such as metro connectivity and other modes of transportation are being developed and will eventually be made available to the public; therefore passengers will rely on taxis/ private vehicles/ and/or road-based transportation in the interim.
To ease accessibility to the airport long term, authorities are focused on strengthening multimodal connectivity. The official commencement of commercial flight operations from Noida International Airport has marked the close of years of development, financing, and execution, as the first aircraft has now successfully landed at Jewar and thus destroyed the void of commercial aviation in India.
As more airlines begin to build out their services and infrastructure, Noida International Airport will ultimately become one of the largest aviation/economic centres in northern India and have a major impact on travel and development in the NCR and in western Uttar Pradesh for decades to come.
